The Computational Law Lab at the University of Tübingen is searching for a PhD student / doctoral candidate in Machine Learning and Law (m/f/d; E 13 TV-L, 75 %).
The position is limited for three years. Remuneration is in accordance with the E 13 TV-L collective agreement.
The Computational Law Lab (www.complawlab.com)
is an integral part of the CZS
Institute for Artificial
Intelligence and Law at the University of Tübingen.
This
interdisciplinary research hub focuses on the interplay
between artificial intelligence
and law (www.ailawinstitute.de).
Our lab is committed to exploring the application of
machine
learning techniques, particularly Natural Language Processing, in the
legal
field. This involves not only the development of advanced
Legal Tech applications but
also a deeper investigation into how
data-driven methods can contribute new insights
to the legal
sciences. Our focus extends beyond sophisticated computational models
to
the broader realm of how machine learning interacts with
legal frameworks. Key
regulations, such as the GDPR and the EU
AI Act, mandate fairness and transparency in
data processing.
But how do we achieve these standards amidst the technical
and
mathematical challenges we face?
We seek
motivated candidates with a strong background in computer science
or
related fields (a master's degree is mandatory) and with
interest in interdisciplinary
work. Ideal candidates will have:
Experience or initial exposure to data analysis, machine learning and natural language processing
A "hacker" mindset, demonstrating creativity as well as systematic problem-solving skills in tackling novel challenges
Knowledge of German, US, or European law is a distinct advantage
If you are an open individual and
eager to discuss science, we are happy to receive your
application.
Please direct applications and questions to Kristof Meding
at
kristof...@uni-tuebingen.de. Applications should be sent
as a single PDF file and
should include a cover letter
indicating the applicant’s primary research interests, a
detailed
curriculum vitae, previous certificates of achievement (degrees,
etc.), as well as
the contact details of two referees. The
application deadline is July 20, 2024.
The University
Tübingen seeks to raise the number of women in research and
teaching
and therefore urges qualified women academics to apply
for these positions. Equally
qualified applicants with
disabilities will be given preference. Formal employment
procedures
will be carried out by the central administration of the University
of
Tübingen.
