On behalf of Katharina Isabel Schmidt we cordially invite you to a virtual lecture in our Speaker Series of the Minerva Fast Track Research Group "Artificial Justice" on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (CEST).

 

Henry Prakken (Utrecht University) will be speaking on “The History of AI & Law: Not Just ChatGPT”.

 

About the Speaker:

Henry Prakken is professor of Artificial Intelligence and Law in the Responsible AI Group of the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University. He has masters degrees in law and philosophy from the University of Groningen as well as a PhD from the Free University Amsterdam. His main research interests concern artificial intelligence and law as well as computational models of argumentation. He is a past president of the International Association for AI & Law (IAAIL), of the JURIX Foundation for Legal Knowledge-Based Systems and of the COMMA conferences on Computational Models of Argument. He is on the editorial board of several journals, including Artificial Intelligence and the Law.

 

About the Topic:

Artificial Intelligence & Law is not just something of recent years. It has a long history that goes back to the 1970s. Likewise, Artificial Intelligence & Law is not just about applying generative AI to the law. Instead, it has a long tradition of developing symbolic models of legal reasoning and argument. In this talk, Professor Prakken will give a brief overview of these developments.

 

About the Speaker Series:

The Speaker Series of the new Minerva Fast Track Research Group "Artificial Justice" is organised by Katharina Isabel Schmidt. The Series invites guest speakers who work at the intersection between law, computer science, and the humanities. Neither technical nor juristic knowledge is a prerequisite for participation—the Series is aimed at anyone with an interest in critical and interdisciplinary perspectives on “Law and AI.” The event takes place on Zoom and is scheduled to last one hour.

 

The virtual lecture will be held as a video conference via Zoom. Please register no later than Tuesday, 8 July 2025 using this LINK.
