tabs no longer visible in JupyterLab

I used to have tabs automatically visible in JupyterLab but at some point in the last couple of days, they went away.  A screenshot is attached.  I have the tabs menubar open showing that there is a notebook tab and a text editor tab.  However there are no tabs visible above the notebook.  I don't recall doing anything, I just looked up and realized the tabs were gone and I don't see any configuration options anywhere toggling this.

This is the "Single-document mode", and lets you focus on only a single pane, even if you have a complicated tab layout. You can toggle it in the command palette (search for single-document mode), or use the shortcut key "command shift Enter" on OS X, or "Control shift enter" on windows.
