Hi,

Nice group.

Does anyone know if Jupyter folks will be at the upcoming SSURF meeting Jun 26? This is a meeting of the Society for Science and User Research Facilities. It's theme is science infrastructure, seems relevant to this group.

Hi David, and all (?),

We should indeed think about possibilities to meet up at conferences. One idea that emerged during discussions with Fernando, Jason and a few others a few weeks back (when we decided to create this list) was to have a get together during the JupyterCon meeting in August (https://conferences.oreilly.com/jupyter/jup-ny) with people from this list. The programme seems pretty fixed now, but maybe one evening, or the day before or after the event we could set something up. For that event, we would be sure that the Jupyter folks are at the meeting ;)

Would anybody on this list (or anybody who will be/should be on this list) be interested to come to JupyterCon?

More longterm, we can arrange dedicated sessions at conferences that ‘research facility’ staff would go to routinely. I’ll update on this later.

Best wishes,

Hans

Hi,

Yes, I hoping to come to JupyterCon - I found it very useful last year.  Meeting up is a great idea - I would make every effort to be there.  And I suspect that Tom Caswell and Dan Allan from my group would also come along.

Cheers

The Saturday August 25th will be JupyterCon Sprint and Community day, the pass for this day will be free, and we will of course not prevent people from coming and hanging around if you like to discuss.
The Jupyter folks will be partially busy helping with sprints, but it could be a good day to meet and discuss. We can't guaranty a separate rooms though.

Dear all,

Let’s try to push this ahead. I am making arrangements to attend the meeting.

I could imagine that we pick an evening during the main conference to get together, or potentially the Saturday as Matthias points out. If we do this on one of the earlier days, we’ll have more time for shorter discussions during the other days (coffee breaks etc, dinner etc). We can fine tune this when we have a few people attending and know their schedule.

Who will (or intends to) be there from the research facilities? Please forward and invite relevant colleagues, etc.

Best wishes,

Hans

A meeting like this would be fantastic. I won't be there but I fully support it :-)

A prompt that might spark some useful conversation:

"What are the missing pieces in the Jupyter ecosystem that impede the adoption or usefulness of JupyterHub/Binder at scientific institutions?"

I would love to see a gathering on this topic at JupyterCon. Let us
know if any help is needed from the JupyterCon organizers. The
simplest approach logistics wise would be to meet during the Saturday
community sprints.

Hi Brian,

I think that seems the most logical thing to do.  I suppose all we need a somewhere to meet.  For those of us that need DOE/Lab approvals  then it would be useful to have it listed somewhere when the community sprints are listed, so we can point people at something in order to justify an additional day.

Cheers

Hi all,

Stu - is this link below sufficient to support your extra day at the meeting?

Ana, any chance we could have a tiny room or a corner with a TV/projector where we could gather on the Saturday morning, and share some slides?

It would also be good to get an understanding of who will make it. I should be there, Saturday morning and quite likely the early afternoon would work well for me (probably have to get a flight in the late afternoon/evening).

If people are happy to discuss in public, I suggest to just reply here and extend the list of likely attendees below, otherwise I can offer that people contact me off-list and I’ll count numbers and report back. (If the conference organisers want to do this, then that’s even better, of course.)

To start:

1. Hans Fangohr, European XFEL, Germany, and University of Southampton, UK

Best wishes,

Hans

Hi Folks

I think we would be helpful for DOE/lab folks to have a link or even just a bullet point, that is a little more specific to this working group.

Also want to RSVP yes for 2 or 3 folks from LBL/NERSC.

Hi Shreyas,

Would something similar to what Jason wrote when we kicked off this mailing list earlier this year work?

---

The Jupyter at Research Facilities working group will be meeting during the
JupyterCon Community Sprint from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, August 25, at the Hilton Midtown (Murray Hill), sponsored by Bloomberg.

During this time, the Jupyter at Research working group which will include a wide range of research facilities (such as X-ray light sources, astronomical observatories, genetics centres, etc.). Along with Jupyter core developers, we'll be discussing the unique needs of research facilities when using Project Jupyter tools, such as:

1. Large data sets that are expensive to produce and prohibitive to transport need to be stored and analyzed for long periods of time. Often these data sets must be analyzed remotely.
2. Large computational resources (such as clusters or supercomputers) need to be scheduled and shared among facility users and accessed remotely.
3. Remote teams need to work in collaboration with facility personnel or on-site team members to collect and analyze data. This includes both interactive collaboration as the data is being collected and analysis long after the data has been collected.
4. Reproducible computational results, including narrative, data, code, and output, need to be stored and accessible remotely for potentially long periods of time.
5. Results need to be converted to formats suitable for publication and sharing with the broader community.

Hi all,

Given the focus of the community sprint day at JupyterCon, I think it
is important for this "get together" to be formally part of the main
community day. We have a big space and I don't want there to be things
that pull people off to other spaces that artificially limit
interactions. In other words, let's make this *part of* the community
day, not something that is separate.

Cheers,

Brian

As far as I am aware, that is what folks plan to do. Congregate together within the community day space. The detailed points are items that may be discussed. If the floor plan is like last year, there would be one corner of the room that will be home base for research computing but be in one place to foster cross project and community collaboration:-)

I think that the best, we've already talked about having separate rooms for other smaller groups with O'Reilly, I don't think any were available as the venue is usually booked more than a year in advance.
If some people need/want specific jupyter letterhead invitation for the Saturday that is doable

Just sending a quick message out to folks at Jupytercon. We'll be meeting to discuss Jupyter at scientific facilities and HPC centers. The plan is to meet on Saturday during the community sprint sessions.

I think the organizers want us to register here to get a headcount:
