National Petition to Add GMO Information to Nutrition Labels

Hi Everyone,

I think some of you will be interested in this so thought I'd pass it along.  Please sign and share as you feel led.   

Over 70 percent of processed foods have genetically modified ingredients. Polls have consistently shown that over 90 percent of the public wants to know if the foods they are consuming contain genetically modified ingredients. They want the same right to choose as consumers in the 64 countries around the world that mandate some form of labeling of GM foods.

We, the people of the United States, demand that our elected leaders and officials reflect the voice of the people and allow us the freedom to make food choices that are safe and healthy for our families.

This includes not only labeling the fat, sugar, and caloric content of our foods, but also those which have been genetically modified. There is no better time to implement mandatory labeling of these ingredients, especially if the proposed changes are in the interest of allowing consumers to make more informed choices about the foods they are consuming. 

That's why I signed a petition to Margaret Hamburg, FDA Commissioner, The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:

"The FDA is proposing several changes to current nutritional labels to more accurately reflect the content of the product and to encourage consumers to make healthier choices. 

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and other industry groups approve of the new nutritional labels to be implemented on over 700,000 products within the next two years. They said they are committed to working with the Obama administration to help Americans make better diet choices with no mention of increased cost to consumers. These same organizations have been donating millions to anti-GMO labeling campaigns, and falsely warning consumers about increased cost to change such labels. 

With this announcement of changes to nutritional labeling, the FDA has opened a 90-day comment period, during which experts and members of the public can provide input on the proposed rules. The FDA will then issue a final rule. Officials said they hope to complete the process this year.

With over 90% of Americans demanding food labeling, what better time to also add GMO information to these new standards?"
