Dear Friends,

Just a note to let you know Im thinking about each of you.

Wondering whats new in your lives.

As for me, Im enjoying using my NVC skills in my 1:1 sessions with diabetic patients.

It is a pleasure to be with people and to listen, express genuine empathy, and make new friends on a daily basis.

It is consistently rewarding to see scowls on faces replaced with bright smiles in minutes.

Thats my entire NVC story at this moment in time.

Wishing those of you who celebrate holidays at this time of year the richest of experiences.

As one who celebrates Christmas, I cant help but be reminded of the many gifts in my life, you all being precious ones among them.

Hoping everyone is healthy and happy.

With much love,

Peggy

Thank you Peggy for your connection, and the update on what you are doing.

I graduated with my master’s in clinical mental health counseling May 17th. I am employed at a non-profit residential substance use disorder treatment center in Lebanon NH. Here I am accumulating intern hours for my Clinical Mental Health Counselor certification and My LADC license.

I find that my NVC Training works in tandem with Motivational interviewing, mindfulness, seeking safety, and DBT all evidence based practices. When I am answering the National suicide hotline (I am also a certified crisis counselor) The knowledge of NVC is in my toolbox as people who are suicidal are often angry and will lash out at you, being able to talk to them in using observation, feelings, needs, and requests language is a great way to find out what is going on “now" and to redirect the feelings to positive actions.

I meet with an NVC practice group twice a month in White Junction with Pan Vera, where we share our daily challenges, victories and reinforce, practice and learn our NVC skills

December greeting to all,
Sandy Marmar

Good day,

As always, I appreciate your tracking our group and bringing me back to our connection.

Hope you are all doing well this winter season.

What a wonderful connection, as I am guessing you feel confident and presence as you contribute to your relationship with each person.  How lovely and inspiring!

My life is full with living NVC, as self-empathy continues to be a daily practice for me.  In the NVC tree of life, I am practicing expressing myself with greater intention and finding a range of feeling scared, excited, regret, joy and wrestling with showing up in a new way.

In addition I am quite excited to be offering a year long curriculum in NVC through a course entitled, Communication as a Spiritual Practice.  The learning community is a delight and I learn much from them as well as contribute to their well being.  I co-lead a practice group, which goes up and down in attendance, so at times i feel discouraged because I am longing to build a community that practices together.  Other times I feel such pleasure in my work with my co-leader and also the sharing and learning that occurs.

In early January I am offering NVC empathy to a group of poets, connected to blacklivesmatter.  This is such a passion for justice and relationship building and is my toe into the water around the current issues in our society. I also decided to put out a call to action among the local NVC community to those who are interested in offering NVC within the movement.
Our small group is meeting for the first time in early January to speak about how to be a white ally.  My learning of how to be a white ally is important work, stirring up hope, contribution
and presence to those around me.  Also I feel at times scared at taking risks and clear that I do not want to be afraid to make a mistakes - so similar to practicing NVC sometimes - just being authentic and showing up with deep presence and compassion.

Another area I have been developing curriculum is working with court-ordered parents, who have a challenging relationship with their ex-partner.  It is always an engaging and real class,
where people are SO thankful to receive empathy and to have a new paradigm to lessen their “expensive emotions” that are dragging them down.  Quite fun working with the parents and a challenge in dealing with the director of the agency who doesn’t quite understand what I am teaching.  She says things like, “These people will wear you down.  Don’t give them any extra time or they’ll take over!”  She carries much hurt and disappointment from her own work and has a hard time understanding the freeing process of opening one’s heart with compassion instead of judgments and such.  I’m probably learning more about how to hold my director than the “supposedly difficult” people I am working with!

be well!

In peace,

Susan Kaplan, M.S.W., M.P.A., R.Y.T.
