Hello everyone:

In the spirit of our current meditation on "connection", and consistent with my previous offer, I would enjoy hosting a group telephone call for any of you who would like to interact together over the phone.

The last time we tried this about 18 people showed up for some or all of the call.  Participants on that call expressed interest in doing it again and also suggested some themes for discussion on future calls.  One of those suggestions was to share what various individuals have learned from their own efforts to teach, share or practice NVC since last summer's Albuquerque IIT, e.g., what has worked really well, what hasn't worked so well, what lessons would you like to share or discuss with others, what have you encountered as you try to live NVC?  I would like to suggest that general theme for this call.

If someone would be interested in helping me host the call please let me know and we can coordinate details.

What: 2013 Albuquerque IIT group phone get together
Theme: Sharing what we've learned from our efforts to teach, share or practice NVC
When: Saturday January 25, 2014 at 4:00 PM MST (3:00 PM PST, 6:00 PM EST, or convert to your time zone)

I am willing to host a call approximately every 6 weeks or so -- if there is interest -- so if you can't make this call but would enjoy connecting over the phone with others there will likely be future opportunities.

Note: If you would like to attend the call, or think you might like to attend, I encourage you to register for the call when you get this email. Once you've done this you will receive a response right away and then an automatic reminder for the call with your call in number and PIN 24 hours and 2 hours prior to the call.

Warmly,
Alison

Dear Alison,
Thank you for pulling this call together again.  I was able to join for some of the call last time and I really enjoyed connecting in that way and hearing the voices over the phone of the iit friends who were also able to join.  I will be Taipei over that weekend and so I doubt I can join this time, but maybe, it will depend on a few factors, if I can I will and if I can't I wanted to speak up and let you know why and also to acknowledge my appreciation for your efforts to offer this way of connecting. Thank you.  BTW I think of you often.

In the spirit of grocery store encounters and connection I also just had an incident I wanted to share with the group that really touched me.  I was down the road at a grocery store I rarely go to because it is much more local and doesn't usually have what we're after, but, that day I was after some local BBQ pork which this Chinese deli does well.  I'd put some BBQ pork in my basket and turned back around to look at the roast duck and an older Chinese woman started tapping me on the shoulder and taking my BBQ pork out of my basket.  I tried to speak with her in Mandarin and English but she only spoke Cantonese and I couldn't understand her (and I was getting a little irritated she was taking my BBQ pork out of my basket).  She then starts to talk to some of the folks around us and eventually an older Chinese gentleman said that she wanted me to know that there was a special 2 for 1 sale on the BBQ pork but I needed to hand it to the folks behind the counter for them to mark it for me or they'd charge me more at the check out counter!!
I turned and looked at my new friend, took her hand and let her know through my eyes how appreciative I was that she took the time to connect with me.  She had no intention of letting me out of the deli section without my getting to also take advantage of the deal of the day at the deli!!

xoxo
Katherine

Thanks Katherine.

What a lovely story!

Also a reminder to me that when something unexpected happens and I start to get
annoyed, I can pause and try to reinterpret the situation in order to connect.
:)

Thank you!

Jeff - I had that same thought!
BTW - if you read my '6 degrees of separation' story the other day it just occurred to me that it all began at the 'waifs and strays' party -- which was hosted at Tony and Sharon Melloys!@  For the rest of you to enjoy this, when my husband and I went to Shanghai in the Fall we met Jeff and his wife -- and when they lived in HK she -- you guessed it - worked with Tony Melloy.

I keep waiting for someone in our group to say "Emma and Andrew- OMG he was my college roommate"

Thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes.  Saturday turned out to be a really fun day, in large part because I got to celebrate it with all of you!

Mahadevi, I followed your example and set my intention for connection.  It was like magic!   Smiling faces seemed to greet me everywhere.

Katherine, I love your story about the helpful Chinese woman.  I can see you as clear as day speaking your appreciation to the woman through your eyes.

Speaking of my clerk experience....  At some point I began to sense that I had it all wrong and that I was missing an important lesson.  It was a bit presumptuous of me to immediately start thinking that I should teach a “Customer Connections” in-service to the employees.  I chuckled inside as I began to wonder if perhaps I was the one who needed the in-service!   I began to think that I could have enjoyed a connection with her simply through my appreciation for her being there to help me when I needed her.  I could have enjoyed our connection as two women who work across the street from each other and who serve our neighbors in our own ways.  I realized that I could appreciate our connection without having any expectations of her.  And I suspect there are more lessons for me to learn about that experience...

The most fun connection so far happened Saturday.  My husband and I had left the Mexican food restaurant where I had my birthday brunch.  We were waiting at a corner getting ready to turn onto the freeway, and a gentleman who looked very hungry was standing on the corner.  I passed a bag of non-perishable food through the window to him, and his face lit up like the sun.  He looked at my husband and said with great enthusiasm, “Take that pretty lady dancing!”  Made my day!

Loving our connection,

Peggy

What a delightful experience Peggy. Thanks for sharing.

I just arrived at the Suluk Academy in New Lebanon, New York for Session 2 of our 8 session 2 year program of Sufi studies. Each session is 5 days and I never really felt connected to the people at the last session. I set the intention for more connection at this one and I can ready feel the difference. So glad you suggested this energy/need to focus on!

Love, Mahadevi

HI Alison and everyone,

Just a note to say that we hold our practice group on Saturday afternoons and thus we will not be on the call.  Sad to miss all of you, but you will know that we are spreading NVC.

Warm wishes,

Bruce and Sophia
