Thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes. Saturday turned out to be a really fun day, in large part because I got to celebrate it with all of you!
Mahadevi, I followed your example and set my intention for connection. It was like magic! Smiling faces seemed to greet me everywhere.
Katherine, I love your story about the helpful Chinese woman. I can see you as clear as day speaking your appreciation to the woman through your eyes.
Speaking of my clerk experience.... At some point I began to sense that I had it all wrong and that I was missing an important lesson. It was a bit presumptuous of me to immediately start thinking that I should teach a “Customer Connections” in-service to the employees. I chuckled inside as I began to wonder if perhaps I was the one who needed the in-service! I began to think that I could have enjoyed a connection with her simply through my appreciation for her being there to help me when I needed her. I could have enjoyed our connection as two women who work across the street from each other and who serve our neighbors in our own ways. I realized that I could appreciate our connection without having any expectations of her. And I suspect there are more lessons for me to learn about that experience...
The most fun connection so far happened Saturday. My husband and I had left the Mexican food restaurant where I had my birthday brunch. We were waiting at a corner getting ready to turn onto the freeway, and a gentleman who looked very hungry was standing on the corner. I passed a bag of non-perishable food through the window to him, and his face lit up like the sun. He looked at my husband and said with great enthusiasm, “Take that pretty lady dancing!” Made my day!
Loving our connection,
Peggy

get together (teleconference) - January 25
Dear Alison,
Thank you for pulling this call together again. I was able to join for some of the call last time and I really enjoyed connecting in that way and hearing the voices over the phone of the iit friends who were also able to join. I will be Taipei over that weekend and so I doubt I can join this time, but maybe, it will depend on a few factors, if I can I will and if I can't I wanted to speak up and let you know why and also to acknowledge my appreciation for your efforts to offer this way of connecting. Thank you. BTW I think of you often.
In the spirit of grocery store encounters and connection I also just had an incident I wanted to share with the group that really touched me. I was down the road at a grocery store I rarely go to because it is much more local and doesn't usually have what we're after, but, that day I was after some local BBQ pork which this Chinese deli does well. I'd put some BBQ pork in my basket and turned back around to look at the roast duck and an older Chinese woman started tapping me on the shoulder and taking my BBQ pork out of my basket. I tried to speak with her in Mandarin and English but she only spoke Cantonese and I couldn't understand her (and I was getting a little irritated she was taking my BBQ pork out of my basket). She then starts to talk to some of the folks around us and eventually an older Chinese gentleman said that she wanted me to know that there was a special 2 for 1 sale on the BBQ pork but I needed to hand it to the folks behind the counter for them to mark it for me or they'd charge me more at the check out counter!!
I turned and looked at my new friend, took her hand and let her know through my eyes how appreciative I was that she took the time to connect with me. She had no intention of letting me out of the deli section without my getting to also take advantage of the deal of the day at the deli!!
xoxo
Katherine

| What a delightful experience Peggy. Thanks for sharing. I just arrived at the Suluk Academy in New Lebanon, New York for Session 2 of our 8 session 2 year program of Sufi studies. Each session is 5 days and I never really felt connected to the people at the last session. I set the intention for more connection at this one and I can ready feel the difference. So glad you suggested this energy/need to focus on! Love, Mahadevi Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone |
