In2004, just 2% of Americans listed soccer as their favorite sport. By 2022, that number eclipsed 8% as a younger demographic continues to flock to a game culturally revered in European, South American and African nations.

Learning outcomes for the course include being able to discern the scope of the global soccer landscape; evaluate how individual member associations co-exist within their confederations; scrutinize the managing and marketing of regional and global competitions; analyze the player transfer process that includes labor relations and youth developments; and distinguish the differences of league and operating models globally, among others.

The class is mostly discussion based with a plethora of guest speakers from within the industry to, as Haydamack said, personalize the course. Guest speakers have included a soccer writer from Yahoo Sports, a head executive at VfB Stuttgart of the German Bundesliga, a representative from the U.S. Soccer Foundation and executives from MLS and NWSL teams. The class also went on a tour of Audi Field earlier in the summer.

The soaring popularity of the game has no signs of slowing down. Soccer fans are younger and more diverse than general sports fans in the United States, according to Morning Consult. In this 2022 study, more than half (54%) of the respondents who identified as soccer fans were under the age of 45, compared to the NBA (51%), NFL (46%) and Major League Baseball (43%). Major League Soccer just inked a 10-year, $2.5 billion global rights deal with Apple, and the NWSL recently secured a landmark four-year media distribution contract across CBS, ESPN, Amazon Prime and Scripps Sports.

Brandon Schneider is President & Chief Operating Officer for the Golden State Warriors, overseeing all business-related operations for the team, Chase Center and Thrive City, a privately-financed sports and entertainment district in San Francisco. Schneider, who has been with the Warriors since 2002, is also the Vice President of the Board for the Warriors Community Foundation.

Mark Shapiro is the President and COO of Endeavor, as well President and COO of TKO Group which owns and operates the UFC and WWE. He is the former CEO and Executive Producer of Dick Clark Productions. Prior to that, Shapiro served as Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. Rick Welts, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, retired as President & COO of the NBA Golden State Warriors in June 2021. In his 46 years in the NBA, Welts has four NBA Championships, two WNBA Championships, and one G-League Championship. Welts oversaw the design and construction of Chase Center that opened in San Francisco in 2019.

Dr. Giannoulakis is a sport management academic and professional who holds a doctoral degree in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He has taught in universities and private institutions internationally.

Parallel to his academic career and research agenda, Dr. Giannoulakis has worked as an event manager and consultant in a number of sporting events including the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the X Games, the Indianapolis 500, the Athens Classic Marathon, the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour, and the Athens 2011 Special Olympics.
