Elephants as a species have a lot to teach us. Herds have deep family ties lasting generations, not surprising as elephants feel a full range of emotions like empathy and fear. Naturalists, scientists, and nature photographers have captured an incredible social dynamic called an elephant circle. Female elephants know how to rally around their tribe of women. When a female elephant is giving birth, the other females gather in a circle around her, protecting her and her baby in this vulnerable state. When the baby is born, the females trumpet in cheers celebrating their sister during this important moment. Likewise, when a female elephant is injured, the circle once again forms. As fierce protectors, when a sister is down they gather around her. Shoulder to shoulder, the elephants stomp and kick up dust daring any predator to try and attack one of their own.
Photographer David Yarrow has captivated the world with his powerful photo of an elephant circle. In response to this powerful moment in nature, Author and and podcaster, Jen Hatmaker wrote a powerful message to remind us women how to circle up for each other.
Recently I found myself in a vulnerable state, out of energy and drained of any positivity. While I am use to being the leader of the circle caring for those around me, I found myself in the center. Without me asking, my tribe of women encircled me. They poured out encouragement, they let me cry, they listened to my story, they brought me treasured gifts and gave their time to help me heal. One friend gave me a Christmas ornament from The Festive Farm Company that I will treasure for a lifetime. The beautiful metal ornament was paired with this note.
Notes, Texts, Postcards: Handwritten cards are powerful. Surprise your friends with your words of encouragement. If you can never seem to find a stamp, try the Postagram app. It allows you to upload a picture, write a message, and it sends the postcard to your desired address for under $3.00. Between the cost of a card, a stamp, and the time it takes to gather these things, the price is well worth it. I also use the Bible App to send encouragement. My favorite verses are bookmarked and I send them when I can sense one of my friends might need an elephant circle. One of my favorites is from Isaiah, bringing comfort and hope to all who read it.
The past year had enough trouble for a lifetime. I wish for all of us to move forward into the new year as elephants would. Let us encircle one another with trumpet calls of celebration and guard each other with strength and loyalty.
I just came across this post because one of MY herd shared it with me. And it started something. Thank you for your post, for reminding me of the elephants, and for inspiring me to reflect on the herd I am in.
Quotes chosen for a celebration of life are often different than those chosen for traditional funerals. Celebrations of life focus on finding meaning in a life well-lived, striking a more uplifting tone, and including meaningful, personal details about your loved one. Many families choose a quote from a famous author, stanza from a favourite poem or lyric from a favourite song, in addition to a selection from the Bible or other religious work. These quotes can be printed on the cover of a funeral services program, engraved on mementos or used to open a eulogy or close a service.
Rochester resident and Dover native Skidds, 39, battled brain cancer for years. Originally diagnosed in 2007, Skidds' believed she had beaten the disease until earlier this year, when she learned the tumor had grown back as two and she would need to receive chemotherapy treatments for the rest of her life.
McCusker and her family have coordinated several efforts throughout the area to raise money for her sister, including her 12-year-old daughter, Ahna, who pledged to run 1,000 miles in an effort she called "Run 4 Auntie." Then Ahna's fellow classmates at Dover Middle School, through the Kids Who Care program, walked 196 miles collectively to raise funds for the family.
The evening, filled with many tears and hugs and applause, marked an opportunity to help out Christine and her relatives not only financially, but emotionally as well. Dozens grabbed a microphone to share their fondest memories of the woman that so greatly influenced their lives.
"She became the heart and soul of my law practice. When people come to hire me as their attorney, they come in the worst times of their lives and what they found when they came to my law office was Christine," he said. "And when Christine was in the hospital with cancer, (Steve) would not leave her side I say to you, Steve, you make me so proud. You are the man I always hoped you would be. You were wonderful with Christine."
Others from Christine's childhood came forward, some recalling her Reebok sneakers and Guess jeans she wore to the Garrison School. One couple brought photos of Christine and Andrea as young flower girls in their wedding. Peter Allen, owner of the Strafford Farms restaurant, along with many of the waitresses Christine worked with in her 20s, were there to offer their support.
"Whenever you see a shooting star, it's really beautiful," she said. "It goes across the sky and you never forget it. It's only there for a moment. But you're never sad that you saw it. You just think about how beautiful it was. And that's what my sister has done for me."
Carrie Eisner of Dover, a dear friend of Christine's, referenced the dozens of committees Christine was a part of in her active days with the St. John's United Methodist Church. She said the evening symbolized a coming together of the hundreds of people Christine had an effect on in her life.
"All of us in this room realize how lucky we are to have stumbled upon her," Eisner said. "That's why this is really called 'Cheers to Christine.' You have made a difference in all of our lives. We love you so much."
Andrea stood near her family throughout the evening, walking over to the children's tables when she saw her daughter sobbing, and wiped tears from her own eyes as people spoke. James Taylor's "Secret O' Life" rang out at the end of the speeches as a slide show of photos from Christine's life played on a screen projection.
Skidds' younger sister by two years, McCusker said their family has always been tight-knit. The sisterly duo both attended University of New Hampshire, both married men named Steve, just months apart, and had their children at nearly the same time. Skidd's son, Garrett, and McCusker's daughter, Ahna, were born just 10 days apart.

My distance reiki session with Marlene was very relaxing. I felt so calm, almost falling asleep. I felt a light pressure at times during the session which allowed me to see what areas Marlene was working on. After the session, Marlene provided the messages that spirit had for me. It resonated with me and will help me going forward. I am excited to book another distance session!
I know this sounds crazy, but I felt like the outline of my body was humming with a low, warm hum! I am feeling less worried and more accepting of the days and weeks ahead. I also slept much better than I had for several nights and woke up feeling warm and energized.

In early 2016 we launched our first social business Northern Flicker and left a conventional work life to travel the world helping tell the stories of inspiring change makers. From Costa Rica to Sweden, Japan to South Africa and beyond, we encountered people who were alive with purpose.
Our journey has offered us some valuable perspectives and insight especially in the realm of relationships, communication, conflict, and working with fear to identify and get after our dreams. We offer personal coaching and individualized counsel to those that feel resonant with us. If you are interested, we would love to set up a free first session to explore if we would be a good fit in helping you live a more vibrant and purpose-filled life.
