Hello everyone,

this seems to be the time where more and more topical julia mailing lists and gitHub projects evolve. I wanted to ask if there is interest in
having a group that brings together people (and hopefully more packages) with a geoscience/Earth System Science and modelling background.

I think there is a lot of potential work, e.g. wrapping GDAL, which has been mentioned before https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/julia-users/Y44dSdgoG9w/Vm7o82nlvXMJ or improving spatial plots, map projections ...

So give a short note if you are interested in such a topical group. If there is some feedback, I (or someone else) will create a julia-geo mailing list, where we could continue discussions.

Hi Fabian,

I have a particular interest in satellite remote sensing and related Earth Science applications. I'm overcommitted over the next few weeks, but I have done some related Julia work which I hope to open-source and contribute after that. I will definitely participate in due course if such a group is created.

Regards, Adrian

I'm interested and would sign up. (although I haven't used julia for work yet) Mauro

I am also interested in this subject where my particular interest would be in creating a GMT5 wrapper, which indirectly would give access to some parts of GDAL but off course a GDAL wrapper would be of most interest.

I've been working on some Julia implementations of my own coastal geomorphology work and thinking a little about whether there might be room (and time) to build some of it into a more fully-fledged geosciences infrastructure. I'm definitely up for a julia-geo group.

I would also subscribe to a julia-geo mailing list, it would be a good place to coordinate building a good environment for doing our type of work. My particular interest is mostly hydrology.

I would also be interested in this group. I do atmospheric science (modeling, climate, etc) and see the limited graphics in julia as the biggest limitation to using it for research.

The extensive graphics capability in Matplotlib for Python is an excellent interim solution through the Julia package PyPlot.  I use it every day.

Thanks for the replies and updates on ongoing activities.

I just created a new julia-geo mailing list.
