The "up for grabs" issues are more on the language side rather than the compiler side, so as Viral said, if there's anything specific you're interested in, we can probably (definitely) find something that's not on the list.

Do see this issue for adding SIMD types to julia. May be a good compiler project for someone familiar with LLVM.

The actual compiler part of Julia is very small and is fairly tightly designed, so whatever you do decide you want to do, it's encouraged to discuss it beforehand to elicit feedback, especially from Jeff, before making any big changes.
