I'm curious where things stand in terms of Julia's dependence on gfortran when running on linux.

I'm asking because I've not been able to produce a julia tarball (on Ubuntu 12.04) that I can take to another machine and run without first installing gfortran... Is that probably a result of my environment? Or is there no easy way yet?

It is due libgfortran and libquadmath. These are copied for the mac and windows versions. We can do the same for linux too.
