Hi folks,

I'm Ian, and I've been adding some updates to our site, nice to meet ya!

A user from our to-be sunsetted matrix/element instance requested that this link be removed from our OpenAstronomy profile as well. While going through this, I noticed that the mailing list link currently points to our Discourse page.

I think this is great, and was wondering if it would make sense to further solidify things by also sunsetting our presence here in favor of Discourse? Totally open to reasons to keep this instance too, I'm just not too familiar with this workflow and would love to learn more about its specific use cases.

Thanks all for your time!

Hi Ian,

I'm in favour of this, especially because this mailing list has been pretty much inactive over the last 5 years (1 conversation per year since 2020).  I don't know how to technically sunset it, but for the time being I

  • restricted new members to invited users
  • added a message to the description of the group indicating that this deprecated in favour of Discourse
  • added the same message as welcome message for new members indicating that the mailing list is deprecated (this is made redundant by the first point above, but never enough)

Another possible action is to restrict posting new messages to managers/owners.

Bye,
Mosè

Awesome, thanks Mosè! I also just opened a tracking issue on our JuliaAstro site and will copy your responses over there for posterity.
