World Literature Examination Paper Two (Coursework Module) 

 

Candidate Name - William Butcher

  

Coursework (100 marks – 25% of full examination paper).


Coursework Title: Jules Verne and the Literary Inspiration of Place.

 

 Using any relevant Verne texts and your own knowledge explain how one of the following places inspired the writings of Jules Verne.

 

a)    Macau

b)    Truro

c)    Lincoln

 

 

Your submission should include the following

 

·       References to that place in the works of Jules Verne.

·       Full transcripts of those references in Appendices.

·       The attractions of the place in terms of social and technological advances in a mid-nineteenth century context including both conflict, and conflict resolution, exploration and adventure on a variety of scales from local to global.

·       References to historical events and personalities associated with the place who have a known and possibly unknown relationship with Verne.

·       References to Verne’s love of secret codes and cryptograms and how they were used in the context of this place.

·       Detailed analysis of passages where Verne uses excerpts from literature (particularly from other authors) science and his own travels in formulating texts which relate to this place.

·       Examples of metaphorical use of this place (as outlined by W. Butcher in his 1998 analysis of Atlantis in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea).

·       Possible use of Verne’s metaphorical writing techniques by other named world-renowned authors in the context of the same specific place.

 

Minimum 13,000 words.

 

Reference may be made to similar known academic works such as Lamb (Birkenhead 2025) as a comparison.

 

Candidate Butcher is reminded that his 20-mark essay (minimum 1500 words) on Gustave Flourens is now overdue. If he is having trouble formulating his essay plan (maximum 732 words) then similar essay plans do exist online.

 

Candidate Butcher is reminded that failure to submit either Paper One or Paper Two of the course may result in him failing the whole World Literature US High School grade 9 and 10 (Lower Tier) course and repeating the year.
