I am currently reviewing an article written by James Iraldi, Visit to a Mansion.
Is there a book I can refer to, that has the History of the Jules Verne House in Amiens?
I would like to verify the facts that Iraldi states, and my memories.
He says that the house was used by the Gestapo during the war. Is this true?
He states that in 1949, the house was occupied by Mlle. Lebeurre
When I visited in 1978, I remember that it was an Insurance Office., i.e. no Jules Verne connection at the time!

Yes, I saw that, but I’m wondering if WhiteWashing the events?
In 1949, the family had only lived there 1 year (apparently) so who was there before, during the war?

I have found this, 1938, re the Inhabitant of Verne’s House!, in the Newspapers:
Fernand Henri Eugens Dupetit, 2 Rue Charles Dubois, Amiens, Sommes
The Pittsburgh Press, Sat, July 23, 1938
$90 in Unclaimed funds, held by The Philadelphia Company, Pittsburgh, PA

My guess is that it was a house already built and owned by someone!? But that is a guess.
Piecing together Vernes Amien history (surely listed in one of my biographies somewhere…)
1871 (summer) – 23 Boulevard Guyencourt
1873 (September) – 44 Boulevard Longueville (now Boulevard Jules Verne)
1882 (October) – 2 rue Charles Dubois
1900 (October) – 44 Boulevard Longueville
1905 – Passed away

.. and re inhabitant in 1938.. since the company is holding $90 owed to Fernand Dupetit,
He may no longer be living at 2 rue Charles Dubois, since the company cannot reach him!!!

Very interesting, what date was the house built? Did Verne supervise its construction or purchase it off someone else?

I’m surprised no-one has pointed me toward a book, showing the history of the Jules Verne House.
It must exist, or there must be a few chapters somewhere!
But I have pieced together the following:
Jules moved out of 2 rue Charles-Dubois in October 1900
By January 1909, Fernand Henri Eugens Dupetit, industrialist (industriel) had moved in
He and his family lived there until at least 1937 (they seemed to have a hard time getting, or keeping household staff!)
By October 1945 M. George Leon Jacques Lebeurre (industriel) and (his wife) Mme Antoinette Marie Hortens Seret Lived there
They were still living there when James Iraldi visited in 1949.

Yes, from one of the websites:
From 1900 to 1980, many occupants used the building for various purposes: the German army during World War II, an oil company, an insurance company… However, the decorations of the ceremonial rooms were preserved, notably the magnificent neo-Gothic dining room. Was it out of respect for its illustrious occupant? It will always be 'Jules Verne's House.'
I am trying to determine those “Occupants”, including the German army,

Okay.. I am making progress with House Occupants!
Using the Internet and Google translate,
I have found this ad from
April 24, 1942
Buroangestelite, deutsch sprechend, perfekt in Maschinenschreiben per sofort von einer deutschen Wehr-machidiensistelle gesucht. Vorzustellen - Amiens - 2, rue Charles-Dubois
Using Google Translate (not perfect, but readable!!!) , I get:
Office clerk, German-speaking, with excellent typing skills, sought immediately by a German military machinations agency. Available to hire - Amiens - 2, rue Charles-Dubois
So this puts the German military in the Verne House as was indicated by James Iraldi, American Jules Verne Society
(that’s what I have been trying to verify!)
