I am currently reviewing an article written by James Iraldi, Visit to a Mansion.

Is there a book I can refer to, that has the History of the Jules Verne House in Amiens?

I would like to verify the facts that Iraldi states, and my memories.

He says that the house was used by the Gestapo during the war. Is this true?

He states that in 1949, the house was occupied by Mlle. Lebeurre

When I visited in 1978, I remember that it was an Insurance Office., i.e. no Jules Verne connection at the time!

Yes, I saw that, but I’m wondering if WhiteWashing the events?

In 1949, the family had only lived there 1 year (apparently) so who was there before, during the war?

Very interesting, what date was the house built? Did Verne supervise its construction or purchase it off someone else?

My guess is that it was a house already built and owned by someone!? But that is a guess.

Piecing together Vernes Amien history (surely listed in one of my biographies somewhere…)

1871 (summer) – 23 Boulevard Guyencourt

1873 (September) – 44 Boulevard Longueville (now Boulevard Jules Verne)

1882 (October) – 2 rue Charles Dubois

1900 (October) – 44 Boulevard Longueville

1905 – Passed away

… Andrew

.. and re inhabitant in 1938.. since the company is holding $90 owed to Fernand Dupetit,

He may no longer be living at 2 rue Charles Dubois, since the company cannot reach him!!!

co-pilot (AI) search or AI google mode is not reliable when you get down to specifics -- in general, AI co-pilot is limited as a research tool - except for summarizing a single-article or writing a general essay - i know a lot of you i know overrate AI - it is very limited in research on specific details - its worse than google - in that it researches everything on internet it can repeat common errors-  it strength is pulling together well known facts- like asking it to write a biography of a famous person but even here a error on a detail can slip in if its a repeated error in the data base

Dear Andrew,
the reason I ask is that the upper story of Verne's House bears a strong resemblance to Bidston Lighthouse and keeper's cottage in Birkenhead. This is feature on page 7 on my 'Mysterious Island is Birkenhead part Two, posted a few minutes ago. If we accept that Verne based mount Franklin on Bidston lighthouse (see Verne's transcript) then this may explain why he bought / rented the house in Amiens or even built the house himself (the former being more likely I suppose).

Bidston lighthouse and keeper's cottage was built in 1873.

Best wishes John

I’m surprised no-one has pointed me toward a book, showing the history of the Jules Verne House.
It must exist, or there must be a few chapters somewhere!

But I have pieced together the following:

Jules moved out of 2 rue Charles-Dubois in October 1900

By January 1909, Fernand Henri Eugens Dupetit, industrialist (industriel) had moved in

He and his family lived there until at least 1937 (they seemed to have a hard time getting, or keeping household staff!)

By October 1945 M. George Leon Jacques Lebeurre (industriel) and (his wife) Mme Antoinette Marie Hortens Seret Lived there

They were still living there when James Iraldi visited in 1949.

This is the site of the house where Jules Verne lived most of his life. It is now a museum and the site invites you to ask any question you might have. I am sure they can answer in English. It's possible the city of Amiens bought the house after 1949 to create the Museum. At any rate they should be able to answer your question.

The city of Amiens has also a good site.
Best,

Marie-Hélène

Yes, from one of the websites:

From 1900 to 1980, many occupants used the building for various purposes: the German army during World War II, an oil company, an insurance company… However, the decorations of the ceremonial rooms were preserved, notably the magnificent neo-Gothic dining room. Was it out of respect for its illustrious occupant? It will always be 'Jules Verne's House.'

I am trying to determine those “Occupants”, including the German army,

  • James Iraldi, American Jules Verne Society, visited in 1949 (occupied by Lebeurre)

  • I visited in 1978,  the “Insurance Company” occupation!

  • in 1980, the City of Amiens purchased the house, and I know that the “Centre de Documentation Jules Verne” used the house from that date!

Okay.. I am making progress with House Occupants!

Using the Internet and Google translate,

I have found this ad from

April 24, 1942

Buroangestelite, deutsch sprechend, perfekt in Maschinenschreiben per sofort von einer deutschen Wehr-machidiensistelle gesucht. Vorzustellen - Amiens - 2, rue Charles-Dubois

Using Google Translate (not perfect, but readable!!!) , I get:

Office clerk, German-speaking, with excellent typing skills, sought immediately by a German military machinations agency. Available to hire - Amiens - 2, rue Charles-Dubois

So this puts the German military in the Verne House as was indicated by James Iraldi, American Jules Verne Society

(that’s what I have been trying to verify!)

"Wehr-machidiensistelle" – "military machinations agency"
Probably an OCR error. It should be "Wehrmachtdienststelle", translated by Google as "Wehrmacht office", with Wehrmacht of course being the name of the German army back then. Nowadays it’s called Bundeswehr.
Cheers,
Matthias
