By 1872 in Madrid, the teachings of the German philosopher Karl Krause (1781-1832) disseminated by Julián Sanz del Río, and the Spiritist doctrines of Allan Kardec were at their peak of popularity. This is a moment when there was a boom of secret societies, particularly those associated with Masonry and scientific Spiritism. Psychology began to be considered a science, and many publications of this type proliferated, such as the Revista de Estudios Psicológicos, and Spiritist associations such as the "Círculo Espiritista de Barcelona." Many writers began to produce fictionalized Spiritist treatises that were highly didactic and moralistic in content, a sub-genre assiduously cultivated in Spain, especially after the Revolution of September 1868 (Aponte Alsina 43-44). This type of literature appealed to Puerto Rican intellectuals, who were in tune with the Liberal Creoles' rhetoric of "La Gran Familia Puertorriqueña" which positioned the Hispanic Creole elite as the morally superior fathers and mothers who were meant to guide and control the racially mixed masses. The moral values that Espiritismo advocated--charity, compassion, justice, hope--were motivational for the dominant class "in their quest to liberate the island from Spain and its oppressive institutions" (Paravisini-Gebert 185). It is within this line of thought and tradition where two curious literary works by Puerto Rican authors were published simultaneously in Madrid in 1872: Alejandro Tapia y Rivera's novel Póstumo el transmigrado o historia de un hombre que resucitó en el cuerpo de su enemigo, and Manuel Corchado y Juarbe's collection of seven short stories, Historias de ultratumba.
