Seems like his email has been hacked, as there was another email of the same sort sent to the group along with some other obscure email addresses including Manipal Admissions :-)

s/hacked/cracked/. Hackers are programmers who want to solve
challenging problems, and push technology to the limits. You are
referring to crackers. Please keep the sanity of the word 'hackers'
atleast in F/OSS mailing lists. Also read:

http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

Please don't top post in the list, or send HTML e-mail. Might also want to read:

HI guys,
@shakthi :
as "self appointed " moderator of this list , top posting and considering "cracker/hacker/grey-hat/white-hat/etc" same is fine with me :) .

infact in low volume list like this "top posting" is better .

The problem is that the practice continues when students starts to
participate in bigger lists. Always solve the problem, not its
symptoms.

Hi ,

Bigger lists and this list has two different objectives , we believe  in "informal engagement" rather than alternatives .

@shakti :i agree , i have been part of too many open-source lists and inadvertently all of them have these long posts "chastising" new comers about "top posting" ; that self-righteousness is the essence of problem of "Indian open source" . We need to be more considerate and have a better Mailing application or design one , because i believe that if you are not making life simple of your Target-users , you certainly are doing something wrong .

nevertheless i do urge people to remember what @shakti said once moving on bigger lists like Linux kernel " http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2011/1/4 " or ILUD " http://www.linux-delhi.org/ "

and once again calling black-hat-hacker  , a hacker and top posting is totaly allowed here :) .

IMHO, it has nothing to do with making life simple for your target
users. It is a question of doing it right.

I'll stop here.

HI,
@shakti : its okie if we have this discussion once for all ,i love free speech  so you don't have to stop .

  1. i believe everyone who participates in "this" list is a customer-for-information . Its our job to see that information flows unfettered , so we take decisions accordingly.
  2. and who made inline/interleaved/bottom posting right and top-posting wrong  ?  As  moderators "we" finally decide what suits best for this list  .
at the end of the day every community you join , you follow their rules instead of enforcing your own.

Stopping spammers is the duty of moderators (obviously you shouldn't be hard on the guy whose account got hacked, he is already learning his lesson the hard way.) and we should let people say the word hacker/cracker/whacker/whatever as long as it conveys the meaning. I know its wrong to call a cracker, a hacker. But we are already past the point to try and correct it without coming off as a pedantic nazi, thanks to media. Just my two cents.

Inasmuch as it's not even my tuppence worth, I appreciate your concern and thank you for your efforts to point us to such valuable resources.

I believe this would definitely benefit others and I assume just like it has helped you over the years. However, do note that top-posting is sometimes essential when you only need to convey an idea which might not be completely relevant to the previous post, in which case you cannot interleave your post with the previous. Secondly, HTML or not, is not entirely in one's control as these tags are sometimes inserted by your email application. These can be limited, however, at the cost of losing expressiveness.

PS: Your links are useful and I'd take the liberty of passing these onto my students.

Hi.,
@saurabh : thanks for vote of confidence :) , we are are trying our best but Google groups only lets us be "reactive" to spam rather than pro-active . Once the posting is done mail is sent we can do much other than observe the spam for future infractions
