Hi,

Hows it going in JUIT. Any interesting projects, events or
developments?

The main reason i am writing this message is to share some experiences
in Phoenix Linux user group which I have been attending for the past 3
weeks. I am not sure who is currently managing the JLUG activities,
but anyone one can pick up something and bring in some more activity
in the group.

So here in phoenix, these people come together and see DefCon video
every 2nd saturday and mingle. The 3rd Saturday of every month there
is a Lab HackFest. 1st Saturday's they evaluate variety of distros
(and rebuilding the VMWare System in
VirtualBox [since we can now run Metasploitable in newer VB]) , things
like that. Seminars can also be given on any new stuff you have
learned. Use the JLUG mailing list to keep all others informed about
the events.

Have fun and happy exploring.

Sir,
actually we have just started a FOSS community here where we are following the same traditions and trying to spread more awareness about it and its society in JUIT. We started with introduction section and installation processes and further seeking for organizing some lectures. It will be a great help if you would be with us. We are also planning organize some Fest or just Webinars. Any suggestions to go further with different sessions and tutorials welcomed.

Hi Nukul,

Good to know about the activities. You can also upload the presentations here for the benefit of the entire group. I cannot come there physically but you can post all the questions over here. There are many people in this group who have good knowledge and experience , they will help out.
If you guys are holding a webinar , do share the link here, so many can participate.

If you need any help, do not hesitate and post it here.

Hey Nukul, Harsh Sir,

Lets try to make this group alive again. Here is a little background
for Nukul, who is trying to spread awareness in the college.

I don't know if you know but founders of this group (which includes
Harsh sir here) were also the founders of the college JLUG. And they
did a lot in their time to spread the awareness and the beauty of the
whole Linux ecosystem by conducting workshops etc. After they had
left, a couple of others (also part of this group, including myself)
tried to continue the tradition by doing the same (you can find blog
posts related to these on http://techfreaks4u.com/blog). But after
that year (last 2 years) we have not seen much activity regarding this
in the college. There were our juniors who did follow it and would
have been able to help you also, but I guess they graduated this year.
Though there were some from 1st year when I was in 4th, who might be
able, contact me in private, I will give you their details.
And I am very glad that someone is motivated in doing this.

So my point is, as Harsh sir said, there are many people here who can
help and would love to do it also. Go through the blog posts to find
out what we did and how we did it. For any other info, please post
here.

A few suggestions from my side:

- Conduct a Linux teaching basic workshop first, which includes all
the basic stuff like playing music, movies, telling people about what
Linux is, document, open office etc. This workshop could be conducted
in evenings after the classes are over. Keep the timings such as they
coincide with the classes getting over (5.30pm when we were there), so
that people don't go back go to their hostel rooms.
This should not take more than 2-3 days, everyday even for 2 hours.
And yeah, don't be a geek, and prepare from the layman point of view.

- After this, you should conduct an install fest. We did it in front
of the cafe (if its still there?), you can see that in the photos on
the blog. Now that people are familiar with what Linux is, they would
want to experiment with it, and a few others who would just get it
installed for the sake of it. But there is a good chance of converting
these people also.

- After the install fest, the main part is support. You should sit
down with people and solve their problems and answer their queries.
And this exercise is a lot beneficial even for yourself, you'll get to
learn a lot solving these issues.

- Be prepared for Windows vs Linux flame wars! ;)

Another point, give people links to this group, the blog, and also
promote "Google is your friend". This is very important. Tell them in
case of any issue, they can post it here. As people here have way more
experience than the new guys, I am sure somebody would be able to
answer them, if not, we can at least give pointers. Follow the JIIT
LUG (https://groups.google.com/group/jiitlug?hl=en) , its quite active
and people there are doing quite good in this field.

Don't get bummed by these points, they are just there to give you a
direction. You can obviously conduct anything in any way you want. And
go step by step, theres nothing to worry about, even if you don't get
a good response initially, don't fret. People will recognise it
eventually. The only thing required is motivation and energy which I
am sure you have. :)
And yeah, contact Bhooshan sir, Shipra mam for any help in conducting
events or even any other guidance. Take our names, I am sure they
would remember us. :)

Good luck!

Oh no, nobody comes with that also. Remember we used to tell this to
people in our time also, all of them got to know of it after they had
left college, and after all the ridiculing about LUG etc.

And Saurabh, whats up with you? You must have left this year AFAIR?

Thanks Shakhti sir for reminding him. I have deleted those posts.

Nukul, there is a lot of content regarding open source promotion and
different ideas about conducting workshops on Shakhti sir's website. I
remember reading those when we were planning our events. In fact, we
wanted him to come but couldn't arrange for funds. You might try
getting funding this time.

It is not a question of suing. It is an issue between an employee and
an employer and the underlying contract within.

thnx a lot sir.. Actually we are trying to implement pxe boot server in the campus. But there is still a problem of guys at the server room. They know nothing accept "PORN". They refused to give us DHCP IP address to access the server throughout the campus. We had a talk with Medury sir about this and he said he will discuss it with Noida people and then accordingly take action.
We have started a FOSS community here. We are starting from basics and we are done with installation workshop. We will continue as soon as Placements get over. We hope that you will keep helping us.

regards.

Hi,
@shakti
in my humble opinion , until and unless a NDA is there , the statement "which platform is used by which networking-company" is governed by "companies act 1956" as it's privy to company public information.
so there was no need to delete any post  but i agree better be safe than sorry.

@Nukul : you have good work going on there . Well as one of the earliest user/founders of this group in juit  , which is a big feat in itself considering we  were never liked by authorities :P  ; i think your co-ordination with Mr. Medury is quite admirable .
Let me extend our helping hand to whatever you guys are planning and if we ever are  in vicinity of college we would surely land up there and help you guys out .

btw Trust me whole start-up culture depends on *nix platforms and any innovation happening out there right from
fleet/Truck Management softwares [http://cloudnix.com/ ] to Social Networking [http://www.facebook.com/] runs on linux so its always good to know *nix platform in advance .

One more advice , the Linux scene in India has more politics than actual coding involved . So try getting into more international projects .

right now i am in love with Blender considering it's even getting attention from Pixar .
i have been nudging @chirag  to give it some of his coding love ;)

Ah the same old PXE issues. Yeah even we tried doing it, but nothing
happened. But its good that you guys have Medury sir with you this time.
At that time, even JIIT was struggling to convince their administration
about these issues. But now they have really gone ahead of this and
doing great work as I mentioned earlier. So in any case, put it up in
their group too, ask them what they have done and seek their help. I am
sure they'd be willing to help.

You know get the details, understand the risks involved, the
implementation time, and the overall concepts and then go to Medury sir,
tell him the plan on how it could be done in JUIT also. I am sure, if
you are ready with everything, he will surely ask the server admins to
move out of their chairs.

Wow great. Keep up the good work guys! :)
Now my suggestion would be to increase "development" activities relating
to the open source community like Shashank said. And its gonna help you
in building your career in the open source world, and plus you get to
feel the adrenaline rush by coding and coding. :D

And yeah, start working for GSoC also if you guys have time. Get
involved in the community. I think this is the best time to do it, as
you have like 6 months and by then you will have an understanding of the
project, code structure, people surrounding it, the vision etc. So start
participating!

What if all of us, who are in the industry and are witnessing
increasing use of Linux, write an email to administration and some
teachers who were serious about Linux, that its very important in
current IT scenario to have Open Source knowledge. We could emphasize
that having Linux experience is going to help students in their
careers very much. This might make them consider introducing Linux
more seriously into the campus.

Chirag Anand

Yes of course that is a good idea in general but you have to take into
consideration that teachers and administration would have thought about
it by the past and current efforts in organising these events. The
knowledge sharing which happens through this channel.
And also, the fact that the teachers who supported us then, are the only
ones who can convince administration and I think they are already doing
their bit in this matter. My point here is that we need to convince more
and more teachers to support us, only then there is a chance that the
administration will consider us seriously.

As we know, the history of JUIT does not tell us that students have made
a big impact in changing the curriculum, activities of the college. So I
think we may need to change our strategy?

I have sorta moved away from Linux evangelism and use Mac/Ubuntu at work/home but if you ask me, make activites people centric. The more fun people have the more chances of them coming back.
