Individuals with a strong internal locus of control believe events in their life are primarily a result of their own actions: for example, when receiving exam results, people with an internal locus of control tend to praise or blame themselves and their abilities. People with a strong external locus of control tend to praise or blame external factors such as the teacher or the difficulty of the exam.[2]

However, if the dolphin tends to avoid things, the trainer might try using an unusual object, such as a plastic chair, to create a situation in which the dolphin can receive negative reinforcement. When the trainer splashes the chair into the water, the dolphin may retreat into the next pool due to the novelty of this object. The behavior is achieved because the dolphin wants to avoid the undesirable stimulus: contact with the unusual object. The dolphin receives a desirable, reinforcing consequence (a pool with no chair in it) for the behavior. Positive reinforcement (such as fish or praise) for the desired movement can then also be offered, further reinforcing the behavior.

Formal sanctions, on the other hand, are ways to officially recognize and enforce norm violations. If a student plagiarizes the work of others or cheats on an exam, for example, he or she might be expelled. Someone who speaks inappropriately to the boss could be fired. Someone who commits a crime may be arrested or imprisoned. On the positive side, a soldier who saves a life may receive an official commendation, or a CEO might receive a bonus for increasing the profits of his or her corporation. Not all forms of social control are adequately understood through the use of sanctions, however. Black (1976) identifies four key styles of social control, each of which defines deviance and the appropriate response to it in a different manner. Penal social control functions by prohibiting certain social behaviours and responding to violations with punishment. Compensatory social control obliges an offender to pay a victim to compensate for a harm committed. Therapeutic social control involves the use of therapy to return individuals to a normal state. Conciliatory social control aims to reconcile the parties of a dispute and mutually restore harmony to a social relationship that has been damaged. While penal and compensatory social controls emphasize the use of sanctions, therapeutic and conciliatory social controls emphasize processes of restoration and healing.

Dear God, the world seems so dark and foreboding.
Where are the signs of hope?
What are you calling us to do?
Wars, uprisings, displacements, hunger, poverty, and disease continue to claim victims by the millions around the world each year.
Our ears do not want to hear their stories and our eyes do not want to see their plight because the suffering and destruction is so massive and cruel.
In our hearts and minds there is a desire to help somehow, but the crisis seem so overwhelming that we shake our heads in dismay and we wonder what the point is for us even to attempt to be witnesses for healing and hope in this hellish morass.
We beg with the song writer to open our eyes that we may see glimpses of truth you have for us.
Help us to follow the path of Jesus, the Suffering Servant. Give us the courage to be willing to walk the path of depression and pain with the victims of injustice here at home as well as abroad.
Help us to seek ways to light candles of hope, however small, through our words, our deeds, and our prayers, to encourage our sisters and brothers to hold onto the faith in spite of the pain and suffering they are facing.
And help those of us who are among the fortunate ones, who have enough bread to eat, good health, and who live in relative peace, to open our heart to learn from our sisters and brothers who are living lives of grace and forgiveness in the horrid circumstances which surround them. O God, help us to light one candle rather than to curse the darkness.
We pray this in the name of Jesus, who knows what being a light in this dark world is all about.

This story illustrates the way we approach nature around the world. There are, roughly speaking, three clusters. In some cultures, people need to master and control nature totally, along with all kinds of processes: technical, industrial, financial, and even your time and your life. Nothing is left to chance, just about everything is planned, structured and supposedly under control. Technology is a key player. When things still go wrong, think, for example, of natural hazards, people are left rather perplex. The Netherlands is one of these cultures, just like most of the North-Atlantic regions (Sweden, Volvo). Here water is, of course, serious business and it needs to be either domesticated or at least under control. But the same goes for people with their private agendas, daily schedules, and somehow even the end of their lives.
