The CPU button...

Hi,
Moving to Froyo from Android 2.1, I noticed the appearance of a CPU
button in JD's settings.

Unfortunately, for me the CPU button is not effective at lowering the
max CPU.

Is this true for all froyo Roms, or just mine (Froyo + HTC sense
Modaco Rom's MCR R4 and R5)?

Does the CPU button need a special modification of the Kernel to
modify the phone's CPU values (as is required by SetCPU, which doesn't
work either with my Froyo rom)?

Also, I wonder why the CPU button has 3 sliders? I would have thought
that 2 would be enough, one for min value and one for max value. So I
don't really understand what is the purpose of the central slider?

How are you checking your CPU frequency? I'm not really sure about the
kernel thing... CPU works (very unscientific test via SeePU usage icon
(but you can't do this test anymore from v1.8.3 on as now CPU is
solely screen-controlled)) on CM 6 N1 (Froyo) and it worked on
modaco's first Froyo release (frf51) for N1 - I don't think the latter
used a "custom" kernel (then again, not sure).

Honestly I put the thing together rather quickly after having read
some rather ancient page about modifying certain kernel config files -
this is more proof that I really should browse XDA forums now and then
(certainly there are many threads about SetCPU with a wealth of
precious info); but I stubbornly refuse to, as 400 pages long threads
have a tendency to put me off... and trying to address my ignorance of
all things linux feels like emptying the ocean with the proverbial
bucket (or was it a spoon?)

All I can say is that it seems weird; if Setup finds all the required
files I don't see why it shouldn't work - I'm hoping someone steps in
to enlighten us!

About the 3 sliders: well, it's true that the "help" text wasn't
really helpful... I tried to improve it, so I won't answer yet; let me
know if it's still not clear (or if it's even more confusing than
before - somehow it feels that way).

I was just mentioning that it doesn't work because JD's log says so
( something like "warning max cpu back to 998", which the normal max
cpu for my phone).

Besides, setcpu doesn't work with froyo and a stock kernel, it
requires a modified kernel, so I was thinking it would be the same
with your cpu button.
But I'm too noob to know better.

Wait... does it say so only after a service restart (e.g. after
reboot, then it's normal) or all the time? If the latter (and you
*don't* have other apps messing with the CPU clock), then there's a
bug in Setup.

It is the latter.
If have nothing else messing up with cpu. Setcpu is not install on my
phone because it does not work with modaco mcr froyo r4 or r5 roms

It's very odd that the cpu option is even available if she (he? (whatev, you know what I mean-- stupid pronouns!)) doesn't have a modified kernel.  On CM6-RC1 MDroid the cpu function works fine on JD, even though I use SetCPU instead, for a more robust overclock scheme.

Also, since I didn't see it yet explained, the three sliders are for Max frequency with screen on, max with screen off, minimum frequency.
