The i9000 has a Mobile WiFi AP function which I use for tethering my
iPod Touch.

I'd like JD not to kill the data whilst tethering, but I can't see the
mobile AP program in the apps list. It's accessed through Settings.

There's not always a huge amount of data going on when I'm playing a
Words With Friends or Caracassonne round, so I can't use the data
option either.

Suggestions?

Since running the wifi and the G3 will drain the battery you probably
need to have it plugged in anyway, so just use the "while charging"
option.

You could try setting the data threshold lower or just have something streaming in the background a la Shoutcast/iTunes.  If you're not using the data pipe for much data through your games, streaming music shouldn't have an impact.

But I agree with Mike, since you're probably charging with tethering, "while charging" is a fool proof way without having to use Pandora or the like.

I don't have it on charge when tethering on the whole as I only use it
to play a couple of rounds of words or carcassonne but even so the
screen will lock and data will cut off. I think I'll just try and
remember to disable jd for the duration.

Unfortunately that's the only solution for the time being; now I don't
know if it's possible to detect when Wireless tethering is working,
but feel free to post a feature request on the new feedback forum!
