This is the only episode in the original canon in which Squidward reaches a state of genuine, sustained fulfillment in life. The very premise of Squidward's character is that he is miserable and unhappy with the state of his mediocre life. Additionally, this dissatisfaction doesn't come from a deficiency in his capabilities, but rather it is because he sets his ambitions on goals that will never fulfill him. Every moment in the show in which he achieves some sort of satisfaction is always humorously undercut at the end of the episode. His ambitions are embodied by his rival, Squilliam Fancyson, who has everything Squidward could ever want. To place tensions even deeper, the premise of 'Band Geeks' is a direct face-off between Squilliam and Squidward. Squilliam mocks Squidward for his lack of resources (Squidward has no band for the bubble bowl), and Squidward hopelessly tries to combat Squilliam by creating a band (yet Squidward has neither the resources nor charm of Squilliam). In the end, Squidward does get his all-star band. Yet, this band was not created on Squidward's own strength. Squidward fails hard trying to match Squilliam as a charming band director. Rather than Squidward achieving his victory through his own capabilities, it is only after his surrender to weakness that his bandmates pick themselves up for Squidward's sake. Squidward's victory is achieved by means that are completely separate from Squilliam's. The victory is not only Squidward's but it is also sweet, sincere, and set apart from Squilliam.

There is absolutely no connective tissue to SpongeBob, Adam Levine, and the NFL. And yet these three things came together for one glorious moment, to the delight and/or utter confusion of millions. Just why on Earth was SpongeBob at the Super Bowl? The answer is a lot sweeter and sentimental than it seems.
