The African Studies Center (ASC) at the University of Michigan invites African faculty in Ghana, Angola,Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Rwanda, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Liberia and Uganda to apply for the 2024-2025 University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Program.
This fellowship opportunity brings early career faculty from African universities to Ann Arbor, Michigan for residencies lasting up to six months. Each selected scholar will be paired with a faculty mentor with similar interests, and will have full access to university resources to further their work on a research project, an academic degree, publications, grant proposal, or other relevant activity. The program supports the development of the next generation of African scholars by integrating them into international academic networks, and promotes U-M’s international commitment to research and teaching collaborations across diverse disciplines, from engineering to literature to economics.
UMAPS accepts direct applications from appointed full-time faculty members of colleges or universities in Ghana, Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Rwanda, Mozambique,Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Liberia and Uganda. Applications from any discipline represented at the University of Michigan are welcome, with applications that align with the center's initiatives—African Heritage and Humanities Initiative (AHHI), African Social Research Initiative (ASRI), and STEM-Africa Initiative—being particularly encouraged.
Faculty members of colleges and universities in all other African countries cannot apply directly to the UMAPS program without first being nominated and invited to apply by a U-M faculty member with whom they already have a pre-existing relationship.
Application period: August 15-October 15, 2023
Selected scholars will begin their residency in late August 2024 for the Fall cohort and January 2025 for the Winter cohort.
