ABC of Bengalis

A is for Awpheesh (as in Office). This is where the average Kolkakattan goes and spends a day hard at work. And if he works for the 'West Bengal Gawrment' he will arrive at 10, wipe his forehead till 11, have a tea break at 12, throw around a few files at 12.30, break for lunch at 1, smoke an unfiltered cigarette at 2, break for tea at 3, sleep sitting down at 4 and go home at 4:30. It's a hard life!

B is for Bhision. For some reason many Bengalis don't have good bhision. In fact in Kolkata most people are wearing spectacles all the time.

C is for Chappell. Currently, this is the Bengali word for the Devil, for the worst form of evil. In the
night mothers put their kids to sleep saying, 'Na ghumaley Chappell eshey dhorey niye jabe.'

D is for Debashish or any other name starting with Deb. By an ancient law every fourth Bengali Child has to be named Debashish. So you have a Debashish everywhere and trying to get creative they are also called Deb, Debu, Deba with variations like Debanik, Deboprotim, Debojyoti, etc. thrown in at times.

E is for Eeesh. This is a very common Bengali exclamation made famous by Aishwarya Rai in the movie Devdas. It is estimated that on an average a Bengali, especially Bengali women, use eeesh 10,089 times every year. 'Ei Morechhey' is a close second to Eeesh.

F is for Feeesh. These are creatures that swim in rivers and seas and are a favourite food of the Bengalis. Despite the fact that a fish market has such strong smells, with one sniff a Bengali knows if a fish is all right. If not he will say 'eeesh what feeesh is theesh!'

G is for Good name. Every Bengali boy will have a good name like Debashish or Deboprotim and a pet name like Motka, Bhombol, Thobla, etc. While every Bengali girls will have pet names like Tia, Tuktuki, Mishti, Khuku, etc.

H is for Harmonium. This the Bengali equivalent of a rock guitar. Take four Bengalis and a Harmonium and you have the successors to The Bheatles!

I is for lleesh. This is a feeesh with 10,000 bones which would kill any ordinary person, but which the Bengalis eat with releeesh!

J is for Jhola. No self respecting Bengali is complete without his Jhola. It is a shapeless cloth bag where he keeps all his belongings and he fits an amazing number of things in. Even as you read this there are 2 million jholas bobbling around Kolkata- and they all look exactly the same! Note that 'Jhol' as in Maachher Jhol is a close second

K is for Kee Kaando !. It used to be the favourite Bengali exclamation till eeesh took over because of Aishwarya Rai (now Kee Kando's agent is trying to hire Bipasha Basu).

L is for Lungi - the dress for all occasions. People in Kolkata manage to play football and cricket wearing it not to mention the daily trip in the morning to the local bajaar. Now there is talk of a lungi expedition to Mt. Everest.

M is for Minibus. These are dangerous half buses whose antics would effortlessly frighten the living
daylights out of all James Bond stuntmen as well as Formula 1 race car drivers.

N is for Nangto. This is the Bengali word for Naked. It is the most interesting naked word in any language!

O is for Oil. The Bengalis believe that a touch of mustard oil will cure anything from cold (oil in the
nose), to earache (oil in the ear), to cough (oil on the throat) to piles (oil you know where!)

P is for Phootball. This is always a phavourite phassion of the Kolkattan. Every Bengali is born an
expert in this game. The two biggest clubs there are Mohunbagan and East Bengal and when they play the city comes to a stop.

Q is for Queen. This really has nothing to do with the Bengalis or Kolkata, but it's the only Q word I could think of at this moment. There's also Quilt but they never use them in Kolkata.

R is for Robi Thakur. Many nany years ago Rabindranath got the Nobel Prize. This has given the right to all Bengalis no matter where they are to frame their acceptance speeches as if they were directly related to the great poet and walk with their head held high. This also gives Bengalis the birthright to look down at Delhi and Mumbai and of course 'all non-Bengawlees'! Note that 'Rawshogolla' comes a close second !

S is for Shourav. Now that they finally produced a genuine cricketer and a captain, Bengalis think that he should be allowed to play until he is 70 years old. Of course they will see to it that he stays in good form by doing a little bit of 'joggo' and 'maanot'.

T is for Trams. Hundred years later there are still trams in Kolkata. Of course if you are in a hurry it's faster to walk.

U is for Aambrela. When a Bengali baby is born he is handed one.

V is for Bhaayolence. Bengalis are the most non-violent violent people around. When an accident
happens they will fold up their sleeves, shout and scream and curse and abuse, "Chherey De Bolchhi" but the last time someone actually hit someone was in 1979.

W is for Water. For three months of the year the city is underwater and every year for the last 200 years the authorities are taken by surprise by this!

X is for X'mas. It's very big in Kolkata, with Park Street fully lit up and all Bengalis agreeing that
they must eat cake that day.

Y is for Yesshtaarday. Which is always better than today for a Bengali (see R for Robi Thakur).

Z is for Jebra, Joo, Jipper and Jylophone.

Funny read Atasi but alas do we have something similar for Gujjus/Punjabis/Madrasis....makes me wonder why we end up becoming the laughing stock of the nation :-(

1st picture--
Before the football match between Argentina and Brazil, an Argentinean condom company came up with this ad to show the Brazilians what they were going to do to them.

2nd picture--
Brazil won the match and their Football Association replied to the ad.

Failure spurt in JU tech
- Probe team to mend trend of engineering faculty result
MITA MUKHERJEE
A jump in the number of failures in the engineering faculty’s internal
annual exams of Jadavpur University has sent the authorities into a
tizzy as it threatens to affect campus placement and downgrade the
institute’s rating.

The university’s engineering faculty council has set up a probe team
to mend the trend. “A failure rate of five to six per cent can be
accepted as normal, but this time the percentage in each of the three
years is between 12 and 13 per cent,” said Parthapratim Biswas, a
member of the JU engineering faculty council and the chairman of the
committee.

“We immediately need to identify the causes for the dip in the pass
percentage, find out solutions and implement them as early as
possible,” he added.

The number of failures can lead to a dip in the overall final-year
results. “This will finally lead to a situation when big recruiters
may not want to hire engineering graduates from the institute and poor
placement will result in poor rating of the institute,” said a JU
faculty member.

Data available from the department revealed that a total of 305
students — 114 in the first year, 132 in the second and 59 in the
third year — have failed the engineering annual exams, the results of
which were declared a few days ago.

The trend, according to a senior JU official, can be traced back to
two prime culprits — low attendance in class and failure to maintain
consistency in day-to-day academic activities. “Students are
neglecting day-to-day studies and just focusing on how to get a good
job in the campus interview,” warned Biswas.

The probe committee has been asked to analyse the root causes and
suggest remedial measures. An interim report would be submitted within
seven days, suggesting some short-term remedies for those who have
failed.

A number of unsuccessful students had gheraoed the faculty council
members on Tuesday evening protesting the results and blaming the
failures on their teachers not having completed the syllabus in class.

“Some teachers do not attend class regularly and they had not
completed the syllabus. But questions were set from the entire
syllabus,” alleged a student.

Rubbishing the allegation, a teacher blamed the results on the low
attendance of students. “Students should have lodged a complaint with
the heads of departments if classes were indeed not being held
regularly,” he argued.

Dear All,

The article sent by Arnab surely indicates the downward trend of education among the so called "new generation" (the gap between ourselves and the "new generatiom" is only 12 years though). It is obvious the so called educational reform in India has put an "ease factor" on getting into a professional/engineering course. With this trend the generation is getting a wrong picture that life is very easy and with the recent growth in demand of graduates has put the job market in upbeat to get more such graduates.

With due regards to all concerned, I personally feel that the competent authorities (the policy makers and regulators) are to blame for this. Also, the spurt in no. of engineering collages has made this "go easy" trend more prominent.

Comments and views on this issue are welcome.......

In your spare time, may go through the article I wrote in Sep 2008 on the same issue attcahed as "Trend" .....

I recently went to India and I happened to visit JU. There I met some
students and all of them told me that in Civil Department most of the
professors are so much bogged down into consultancy that they hardly
have time to prepare for the class. They gave the example of Dipankar
Chakraborty (DC), who makes more than Rs.1,00,000 from Joint Entrance
Coaching, of course all three of his brothers help each other out. It
is really hard to believe that the students are the only one to blame.
The proffesors are also responsible equally if not more. Teaching and
medicine (once most esteemed profession) is going down the drain.
Teachers and doctors have become so greedy, it is hard to compete with
them. Everywhere I see small coaching classes sprouting like mushrooms
and everone guarantees a rank in the exam. They are pathetic.

Sanjay...point well raised.....in fact that is also to blame the regulatory body (in JU's case it should be the Dept. Admin and the University Admin dept, JUTA..etc to be equally blamed for).....I feel with strict regulating body all can be made to teach in classes.

The point of Coaching classes and the assurance of rank in JEE is due to the no. of rank announced each year goes till 30,0000 if not more. So, one can say that 30,000 is also a rank !! So they can give you that guarantee of one rank.

In my openion...all the pvt. universities/colleges giving graduate degrees should be well regulated to ascertain that they are not doing business ONLY and fulfilling their commitment towards quality education as well. The CATCH here is that if these colleges get their students through JEE ranking...thay are bound to fill their seats with low rank stundents (can't run their business with high selection criteria and empty seats!!!!) who will ultimately get a BE degree and a job as well. Today's parents (not to be taken as a general statement) will throw any amount of donation to get an admission for their kids. So, the kids also know that I have my "DAD" behind me to settle my future.

Great discussion. Just wanted to get in.

But what I feel that there is some lacking in making the lectures more attractive, given by most of lectures in JU. Of course with due respect, they are quite knowledgeable  and do have a command in their subjects. But problem is unless and until you don't make it exciting or interesting, like giving practical example, the student will not follow you and will skip classes.

For example, how many of us remember that we do have subject of Astronomy and the prof. (forget his name) make the so sort after subject of today, so boring that the attendance keeps on reducing as the semester progresses. If he taught us in a very delightful way, who knows few of us may be a different career altogether.

How ever, i feel the career in engineering is slowly reaching to its stagnate point, but probably opens up a lot of new valuable subjects which will be regarded highly in coming days. Its good to have people have taking more interest in pure science, geology, environmental science.

So, evenif the students may have problems in attending the classes for the reason of their own, but great teachers are those who will bring them flocking to the classroom to hear their lecturees something which make them feel interseting. We have heard of many great teachers/professors? Aren't We???

It’s not a surprise that Civil Engineers, or for that matter, engineers from other disciplines flock to the IT industry. Also, consider the no. of India-educated Civil engineers that take up employment abroad. The article does not mention that number.

After all, it’s almost all (barring the most passionate) about incentives. Why would a fresher accept a pay half as much as his peer? It’s not justified. Change the table around and you will find a flocking in the reverse direction. In fact, it has already started happening with other industries such as Retail and Banking offering lucrative packages. IT is losing it’s position as the most attractive industry. And maybe for good.

Partha's view is taken...but atthe end of the day the Govt is to do that...bcoz the companies do no pay from their pocket as the mergin in today's consultancy business is too less.. to give  a hafty pay package, If the govy agrees to hike the consultancy fee the reverse is bound to happen...

The other part is.... there is stiff competetion in the civil consultancy and construction industry...as so many fake and incompetetnt companies has emerges taking advantage of the nexus with govt agencies with undertable deals, and compromising with the quality of the jobs... a the worst part is that noone in the govt agencies bother about the quality as they are bound by the undertable deals........ like the one exposed few months back with NHAI.

Ranadeep, I totally agree with you that Govt. has a big role to play. Institutions -- I don’t mean only educational but instituions that enforce and maintain fair standards, punish wrongdoers and such - have tremendous effects on a country’s direction. The existence or the lack of such institutions have made the huge differences as we see today among countries that started off at nearly the same point.

Here's the thing - why do we need engineers to repair potholes? Every road requires routine maintenance - and this is surely the municipality's job? How can the article blame that on the lack of good civil engineers? A good engineer can build a good road - but after that, an ordinary but sincere person is required to maintain it.

I have worked 4 years in India in the civil field. basically, the
entire industry is corrupt from top to toe. there is no respect for
the civil engineers. a surveyor used to make more money than an
engineer in a construction site, since he wa the "man" who came up
with staking quantities. Here (in the US) we have a system of getting
licensed (PE), where you have to undego 2 nos. 8 hour exam (EIT and
PE), that increased your ethical responsibility since only PE's could
sign the drawings. In India there is no such existing system, even I
signed drawings for bridges when I hardly had any experience. Its
ridiculous.
