Hi All,

Just a short note to update you on John's current status with the 6th
treatment. Mom & I visited him last night and he was doing pretty
well at that point. It seems however, that shortly after we left he
developed a fever and his white count was elevated indicating he was
trying to fight something off. The doctor has since stopped his
treatment and he will stay in until they get this situation under
control.

Your continued prayers are much appreciated! I am sure he will send
an update when he feels up to it.

I am still in the hospital but I no longer have a fever.  It lasted a little more than a day but was suppressed with Tylenol.  They have been hitting me with general antibiotics and viral treatment.  They have taken multiple blood samples for cultures by have found nothing.  The general belief is that the shingles were not sufficiently suppressed and when the immune system started to drop it came to life.  This seems to be consistent with the temperature behavior.  My temperature did not start to drop even after a good 12 hours of antibiotics but once the viral treatment started the temperature subsided.

Dr. Needles had reduced the amount of my last chemical from six doses to four but I only made it through three before the temperature kicked in.  This last chemical is usually rough to have, it affects my head and stomach.  As of now, my stomach is the biggest issue, I am unable to eat or drink and there is a lot of acid.  I was finally able to receive an Imodium and I have been taking a liquid antacid for the last couple of days, but it all seems like fighting a forest fire with a garden hose.  This isn't the first time this chemical has trashed my stomach, though I did do better last time.

The hope is that I will be leaving on Monday, but it is all dependent on my ability to drink and eat.  Right now it is just a waiting game.  Other than the stomach problems, I am feeling ok, but the hunger from not eating can be a problem at times.  Overall, I am doing well.

Thank you for all of the continued support, it has been very helpful.

John,

Sounds like you've had one heck of a week...wow. On the bright side, by the time you're able to eat, the hospital food may actually taste good to you.  :-)

Hang in there, please know that people who care about you are praying for you and thinking of you daily, and focus upon just getting better. Like someone else said earlier, soak up the rest and build those energy reserves. It's tough to be a patient patient, but you can do it. We have faith!

All the best,
Mark

Well, after a little Doctor management, I was able to leave the hospital today.  It was very nice to return home, especially with us being in full spring bloom.  Most all of the trees have leaves or petals on them, it is a huge improvement over the hospital.

I had to note to myself that when I left a week ago for the hospital I was in strong working order, not physically where I was coming in but doing well, and when I slowly worked my way out of the vehicle I was walking slowly and with a limp into the house.  It is hard to believe what a week of treatment does.  Between the chemicals and being bed ridden, it's a toll.  Every day counts, which is why I pressed hard to leave today.

The support continues to be tremendous and I am always discovering more people who pray for me daily.  Holy week is coming and I have often drawn much from the week, it is a unique time to walk with Christ, even when I was traveling for work.  I hope to be far enough along to be close to the meaning of the week, I feel he has given me more to work with this year.  I look forward to taking advantage of all those prayers during Holy week and I will be praying for the needs of all those helping me.

I will likely provide an update at the end of the week with the technical stats, blood counts and all.

Thank you again and God bless.

John
