Update on John 9-5-12

I saw John today at lunch.  He was deeply asleep.  According to Sean (his son), he was given a "cocktail" for pain and it rather knocked him out.  (Sorry Michael Benz, I didn't get to tell him he was wanted back at work.)
 
Dr. Schaeffer came in while I was there and checked him over.  She said he will need more platelets today because his bone marrow just isn't producing any.  He has been getting neupogin shots to stimulate the bone marrow into producing white cells.  As a result his white cell count is now 3.1, up from 2.5 yesterday.  I feel this is a positive, since his bone marrow is responding to the neupogin, and not just ignoring it.  A healthy white cell count is between 5.0 and 10.0.  We are creeping in the right direction at least. 
 
Sean asked about getting the radiation going again on the tumor, as it seems like John is doing more coughing in the last 24 hours then he had been.  Also, John is complaining a lot about not being able to breathe well.  We are concerned this also may be a sign the tumor is growing.  Dr. Schaeffer said he would have to be transported by ambulance to the Encology building to receive the radiation, and in his current condition, she feels he is too sick to move.  So for now, she is going to continue the course of treatment he is on, since the C-diff is considered the most life threatening, at this point.

Thank you so much for keeping us up to date on John.  He is my favorite nephew you know.

I wish there was something I could say or do to make things better but I am at a loss

for words.

We appreciate reading all the good words expressed by so many of Johns friends.  He is

surely loved by many.  I don't know of a nicer guy in this world.

 

If you get a chance say hello to John for us.  We also are praying for him every day.
