At the beginning of the 1980s, NBC considered eliminating its Saturday morning cartoon schedule, replacing it with a Saturday edition of its weekday morning news show, Today. However, one day Fred Silverman noticed his daughter playing with a Smurfs toy and suggested to Hanna and Barbera that they make a show featuring the blue creatures. Silverman went so far as to tell them that if they could obtain the American rights to the Smurfs from its Belgian creator, they would have a guaranteed show without the headache of having to go through preparing and delivering a network presentation.
