Do you know what the word "admonition" means? Will explain once I get some replies. Thanks!

I do not know what admonition means, however I generally have a smaller vocabulary then most.

As in admonished, like given light discipline or correction?

Generally, I've heard used in way where someone is getting reprimanded however the online dictionary says it can also be used in a way such as to caution against or remind of an obligation. Some examples:

"A gallows erected on an eminence admonished the offenders of the fate that awaited them" (William Hickling Prescott).

The judge admonished the young man for fighting in the street.

Your doctor may one day admonish you to improve your posture.

Cool, thanks. I ask because a friend and I are publishing a website that allows you to admonish your friends anonymously: http://www.admonymous.com (for example, see: http://www.admonymous.com/nevin). We weren't sure if the word was too obscure. I didn't know what it meant until he told me, and I went with the "I have a smaller vocab than most" for a while, until someone else said they weren't sure what it means. But Tim, your meaning is exactly what we are hoping people think it means.

ad: Latin: prefix; to, toward, a direction toward, addition to, near, at;

monition somehow related to monitoring? ... admonish = to move to a state near monitoring or conscious concern

I think old English words tend to sound more heavy than their modern equivalent... in legal matters "admonishment" has been replaced by "injunction"

Thanks! Yeah, I'm sure we'll have to add a cpatcha before long to avoid bot spam. The good news is that people who use it a lot will be logged in when they leave feedback, so they won't have to deal with that. In terms of troll vs useful, we're thinking that if the ratio is too terrible we'll allow users to:

  • require that people laving them messages be logged in
  • have the option of marking any message as "not helpful"
  • site disables posting privileges for trolls, or at least tells them that their messages will no longer go through to user X who has marked them as a troll twice

(the users never have to know who one another is for this to work)

But hopefully it won't come to that, it was just meant to be a simple hack for me and my friends to use :)

Nice idea and your site is done tastefully.

There was one site I came across where you can vent about your boss anonymously. It was pretty ugly. I'm sure the jerry spring style helps internet traffic but it went a little too far at times. Just be careful to screen for really inappropriate remarks for example racist/sexist remarks. Or you can go for just people saying what the want and hiding the remark unless someone clicks on it.

I'll check out the site in more depth later and let you know if anything comes to mind. All in all, cool idea and good luck with it.

Yeah, looks like a great idea and well done. You opening it up to the public, or no?

On people getting the name, you could always toss in a dictionary style definition to the site, like ad-mon-y-mous, noun, "anonymous constructive criticism to help you improve your life". But I think it'll be fine.

Ha. Just realized that your front page basically does that definition thing. Comment retracted!

Heh :) Thanks for the feedback! If you have and negative feedback that you want to give *anonymously* (or just enjoy doing things that are very meta), you can constructively admonish the website itself here: http://www.admonymous.com/admonymous

It's technically wide open to the public right now, but I'm waiting to tell people other than you guys about it until I figure out how to redirect admonymous.com/nevin to www.admonymous.com/nevin (which should be easy, but every DNS change takes 24 hours to test so it's taking forever!)
