Human
right violations during refoulement and displacement of migrants in Africa
A presentation in light of
recent mass-expulsions from Mauritania to Senegal and Mali, from Morocco to
Algeria and displacement following the Malian Crisis
15 April, 2012, 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Kairaba
Hotel, Room 1
Serekunda area,
Banjul, Gambia.
Refreshments will be
served at the closing of the event
As human right violations
increases during refoulement and expulsion of African migrants, so is the level
of impunity that encourages this situation characterized by widespread and
systematic abuses. The civil society must rise to this challenge through coordinated
transnational action that combines utilization of legal mechanisms, advocacy, documentation, reporting of
abuses, capacity building and strengthening
collaborations and communication among partner members to advance migrants’ rights in Africa. This dialogue is
being held in the framework of this year’s 51st session of the
African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul.
This event is an initiative of Justice
Without Borders for Migrants (JWBM) in partnership with the African Centre for Democracy and Human
Right Studies (ACDHRS) and the Sub-Committee
on Migrant Rights at the NGO Forum.
The
goal of this special event is to:
-
Highlight
recent violations, migrants right trends in specific African countries and
transnational efforts underway;
-
Explore
legal means by which migrant rights in Africa can be effectively protected in
the context of the Africa Convention of Human and People’s Rights;
-
Engage
the NGO community and the media on the means by which migrant rights can be effectively
protected in the African context as well as explore strategies to mainstream
key issues among all stakeholders including the Working Group on Refugees,
Displaced Persons and Migrants and the members of the African Commission.
