nice discussion there... The main problem I still see with javascript
technology is that 3D visualisation is still too hard and does not
look good (yet) ...

imho you can do that already using WebGL + Canvas API
(http://code.google.com/p/quake2-gwt-port/) - and it will look cool
(what about splatter effects in molecules...).

True: Only some browsers support that feature set right now, but that
will change very soon (even MS is on board with IE9).
Plus: I do not know what Oracle will do with Java. I could imagine
that they will kill Java Applets.

yep webgl + canvas are looking like the tools needed for the building the next generation 3D viewer.. I am also concerned about Oracle, they own all of my current technology stack...
