ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
Elvis Presley's picture, as big as life, was on the front page of the Commercial Appeal today. I immediately reflected thoughts of Elsie Clanton Hood. I have always known that Elsie was a great Elvis fan. She was at the right age to be able to travel to his concerts during the middle and late fifties. I think she attended every one of his Memphis Concerts.
Elsie told me that she was working at Grenada Bank when she and some friends noticed a poster in the window of a store in Grenada advertising an Elvis performance in Grenada. She stated that she and her friends sat on the first row during Elvis's Grenada performance. Elsie also stated that she and her friends attended his concerts at Bruce and Houston. They managed to sit on the front row of these two concerts.
I asked her if she thought Elvis was going to be the King of Rock and Roll when she attended the Grenada, Bruce, and Houston concerts. Elsie replied, "I only knew that I liked him."
Elsie later married Clayton Hood. Their oldest son is named Clay. Elsie related to me that she and her family later attended one of his concerts in Memphis. She stated that Clayton, her husband, left the concert before his family did. Clayton later told Elsie that Elvis walked right in front of him. Clayton was amused with Elsie that he saw Elvis at a very close distance.
Now, Elsie never attended John Rundle High School, however, I graduated from John Rundle in 1964.

In one of the reunion papers that was handed out either at the 1995
JRHS reunion or earlier at the Fab 50s reunion, someone told the story
of the time that Elvis stopped in Grenada and there was a run in
between Elvis' bodyguard(s) and some local boys over, of course, a
local girl. I have searched my hard disk but can't find a scan of
anything.
Does anyone remember this story? Also, was it true that Elvis bought
a farm near Grenada?

We were told that Elvis bought the Borden plant at Glenwild which is
just south of Grenada and North of Elliott, just past the old McQuay
plant. Most of the buildings are still there.

Regarding Elvis and property in Grenada, I think this is something we
should bring up something with the new Chancery Clerk later this year.

"Mike,
I grew up in Sunnycrest, next to the Glenwild Plantation. I hunted on
it, rode their horses bareback, visited the barn and house place when
they were working cattle, fished and went skinny-dipping in their
creek, climbed that water tower at least once a summer and basically
made it a
large playground for about 7 years. . But I never heard that Elvis
owned it. The vet who owned the house across highway 51 across from
the Borden
plant road was Dr. Turnage.

Hey Mike...
I have been asking around, and I agree with Norm Hitchcock. I don't think Elvis ever owned that property once known as "Clear Creek Ranch" which was managed by, I think his name was, Glenn Sea, then. It was also called Glenwild.
My father, Preston Vance, Bill Brown from Schlater, Junius Townes, J. D. Branscome, and Hayes Branscome bought Glenwild in the 60's from Buster Williams from Memphis, TN...
Back in the late 50's (not exactly sure the year), Elvis came to Grenada and came to our house with my older brother. He was just on the edge of becoming famous.
Fun walking down "memory lane".....
