ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

Elvis Presley's picture, as big as life, was on the front page of the Commercial Appeal today.  I immediately reflected thoughts of Elsie Clanton Hood.   I have always known that Elsie was a great Elvis fan.  She was at the right age to be able to travel to his concerts during the middle and late fifties.   I think she attended every one of his Memphis Concerts.

Elsie told me that she was working at Grenada Bank when she and some friends noticed a poster in the window of a store in Grenada advertising an Elvis performance in Grenada.   She stated that she and her friends sat on the first row during Elvis's Grenada performance.   Elsie also stated that she and her friends attended his concerts at Bruce and Houston.   They managed to sit on the front row of these two concerts.

I asked her if she thought Elvis was going to be the King of Rock and Roll when she attended the Grenada, Bruce, and Houston concerts.   Elsie replied, "I only knew that I liked him."

Elsie later married Clayton Hood.  Their oldest son is named Clay.  Elsie related to me that she and her family later attended one of his concerts in Memphis.   She stated that Clayton, her husband, left the concert before his family did.  Clayton later told Elsie that Elvis walked right in front of him.   Clayton was amused with Elsie that he saw Elvis at a very close distance.

Now, Elsie never attended John Rundle High School, however, I graduated from John Rundle in 1964.

Joy,

In one of the reunion papers that was handed out either at the 1995
JRHS reunion or earlier at the Fab 50s reunion, someone told the story
of the time that Elvis stopped in Grenada and there was a run in
between Elvis' bodyguard(s) and some local boys over, of course, a
local girl. I have searched my hard disk but can't find a scan of
anything.

Does anyone remember this story? Also, was it true that Elvis bought
a farm near Grenada?

Mike,
I did not attend either of these reunions. However, I would love to
read about the story of Elvis's bodyguard. This rings a bell, but I
cannot recall the story. I never heard about Elvis buying a farm near
Grenada. This does not meant that he did not buy one. I would love
for someone to "cough up" these stories.
I loved Elvis. I only play his music in my car. I was getting gas
one day last summer. Now, I am sixty-one years old. There was a
teenager "bursting my eardrums" with some of the strange vulgar
"music" we hear today. I just got back into my car and turned up the
volume as loud as my speakers would allow of Elvis's "Suspicious
Minds". The young man and I glared at each other. I think I "blew"
the sound of his music away. I, also, think we had an audience.

Thanks for blasting the "youth and his music". Score one for us.

We were told that Elvis bought the Borden plant at Glenwild which is
just south of Grenada and North of Elliott, just past the old McQuay
plant. Most of the buildings are still there.

Thanks for this information. This would be a good "look-up" in the
Grenada Chancery's Clerks office and get a copy of the deed.
However,
time is always a factor. However, this is interesting, and I will
keep this on my list as something I want to do.

Names of property close to the Borden plant I think include Chamberlain,
Wilkerson, Lane, McCormick, Bailey, Long and Denman. Mary Ann
Chamberlain lived just across the closest road to the Borden plant. I
think there was a girl by the name of Wilkerson whose parents property
was next to the plant, right across the road from the Chamberlains and
Dr. Denman had a vet office just across the highway. Mrs. Chamberlain
was a teacher. The other propertys are further down the road and across
the railroad tracks. Let me know if these names help any.

Mike, I heard that he bought the Glenwild place, just south of Grenada on Hwy 51. I don't know if it was a rumor or not, probably so. It would be interesting to find out. Sandra Tharpe Barnett

Frankly, I do not believe Elvis had property near Grenada. However, he
and the boys in his band use to eat at the Chicken Inn en route back
to Memphis when they would be playing joints over in the Delta. My
wife's Daddy, Buddy Biddy, drank coffee with Elvis at the Chicken Inn
and said he was a nice boy. --Arnold Dyre

Regarding the Chicken Inn -- I posted some photos that Mickey Trussel
took in 2003 of the old Chicken Inn building. See
http://groups.google.com/group/JRHS/web/chicken-inn---grenada.

Regarding Elvis and property in Grenada, I think this is something we
should bring up something with the new Chancery Clerk later this year.

Mike,
Sometimes, I travel to Grenada from Enid by Highway 51. Everytime I
pass the former loacation of the Chicken Inn, I smell the aroma of
hamburgers and french fries. It was here that I first remember eating
my first hamburger with french fries.
sitting in a booth with red material covering the seats. Would it
have been red leather? I was with my parents. I can still remember
looking across the table at my father. I know I was pre school age.

Here is a message from Norm Hitchcock re Elvis property in Grenada ---

"Mike,

I grew up in Sunnycrest, next to the Glenwild Plantation. I hunted on
it, rode their horses bareback, visited the barn and house place when
they were working cattle, fished and went skinny-dipping in their
creek, climbed that water tower at least once a summer and basically
made it a
large playground for about 7 years. . But I never heard that Elvis
owned it. The vet who owned the house across highway 51 across from
the Borden
plant road was Dr. Turnage.

Norm"

Hey Mike...

I have been asking around, and I agree with Norm Hitchcock.   I don't think Elvis ever owned that property once known as "Clear Creek Ranch" which was managed by, I think his name was, Glenn Sea, then.  It was also called Glenwild.

My father, Preston Vance, Bill Brown from Schlater, Junius Townes, J. D. Branscome, and Hayes Branscome bought Glenwild in the 60's from Buster Williams from Memphis, TN...

Back in the late 50's (not exactly sure the year), Elvis came to Grenada and came to our house with my older brother.  He was just on the edge of becoming famous.

Fun walking down "memory lane".....

Yes, and he built an airstrip so he won’t have to fly in and out of the Duck Hill Metropolitian Airport.

My first cousin's, Rufus Marter, daugher and son-in-law, Anne Marter
McGee and Woody McGee now own Glenwild. I do believe I did hear a
rumor that Elvis had worked out an agreement with them to protect his
privacy. I do believe I smell a story here. There may be a cover-up
here. Perhaps, I can do some "snooping".
