Dear Sir,

We got to know that after more than 40 years of teaching, you are retiring from XIC.

This is a good time to let you know how much we appreciate all that we have learnt from you and to thank you for it. 

We remember your penchant for perfection, your matter-of-fact approach to things and your scrupulous eye for detail. We could see that you worked hard to inculcate the same qualities in us. It must have been a steep climb at times (given the way we were), but you kept at it.

In the times that we live in -- when it is so easy for truth to be run down -- each of us appreciates even more deeply the worth of these qualities. Deeper still is the realisation that there will be few teachers like you who correct the minutest of our errors and smoothen the most jagged of edges.

Thank you for helping us become what it is sometimes so difficult to be -- just reporters.

Many, many thanks, Shritama for the thoughtful compliments. It's always a pleasure to hear from one's former students, more so when the contents are so complimentary.

Details and accuracy are always important, but more so at a time like today when nationalistic leaders accuse the media of disseminating "fake news." One error, however minor, is used to discredit an entire story, and in some states even have charges of sedition filed against the writer/reporter.

As I mentioned at the function, today we have a state of emergency, in all but name. The major media outlets are all compromised.

I always enjoyed teaching but at 74 and working full time, I found the classes and correction of papers a bit of a strain. 

I also learned a lot from the students and so I am indebted to you all as well.
