Diferença entre propriedade e atributo

Pessoal, bom dia.

A diferença entre propriedade e atributo é que o atributo é uma informação default do elemento enquanto a propriedade são informações adicionadas e removidas em tempo de execução?

Eu estou estudando a documentação, quando chegou nesses dois métodos fiquei meio confuso...

For example, selectedIndex, tagName, nodeName, nodeType, ownerDocument,defaultChecked, and defaultSelected should be retrieved and set with the .prop()method. Prior to jQuery 1.6, these properties were retrievable with the .attr() method, but this was not within the scope of attr. These do not have corresponding attributes and are only properties. 

Ou seja o prop foi incluído a partir da versão 1.6 pq nestas tags ai o attr não atendia, sendo assim se vc usa versão >=1.6 então prefira usar prop. :)
