Dear everyone,
たいへんお疲れさまでした! \(^o^)/
Thank you for a wonderful year of Japanese. I hope that you enjoyed it, and learned a lot. All of you became guinea pigs for multiple untried projects, and I apologize for the ones that didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. Nonetheless, I hope that the ones that you found valuable made up for the bad ones.
A few announcements:
Mailing list
I will be using the JPNS1001 mailing list again next year for my 1001/1002 classes. If you want to stay on the list, you are welcome and encouraged to remain and take part in our discussions, but if you would like to remove yourself you can go to
http://groups.google.com/group/jpns1001 to do so. I will keep the JPNS30x0 list up a little bit longer, but as I don't think that I will be teaching 3000 courses next year, I will probably delete the list sometime in the nearish future. You might also be interested in an alternate group that I created last year for JPNS learners in general:
http://groups.google.com/group/jpns . It isn't an active list now, but might become one if more people join.
Summer study group
Several students have expressed an interest in forming a summer Japanese study/conversation group. Some want to just practice their Japanese, others want help with independent study, and several expressed interest in getting help with reading manga. I would like to initially propose that we meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 2:00 in the area near the Jittery Joe's in the SLC/MLC, or "the Zell", or whatever it's called now, starting on Thursday, May 14. That is just a proposal, and if those days don't work then please speak up so that we can find times that work best for everyone (though I will be assisting with a Maymester class, and so can't move the time earlier--I will also be taking a summer (June only) course, so the time might have to be changed then).
Open JPNS1001 course
Does anyone have any friends/family/co-workers/pets who might be interested in starting to study Japanese, but can't take 1001 at UGA this fall? I want to open my section of that course up to the general public, so that anyone interested can study along with us. I will be uploading recorded lectures, course materials, tests and answer keys, etc, so that independent learners can take part. We will also probably use
tonysensei.com as a place to post questions, start discussions, etc. I will be making announcements related to the course on the JPNS1001 mailing list, so if you know of anyone who might be interested please ask them to go to
http://groups.google.com/group/jpns1001 and join the list. Unfortunately, independent learners won't be able to get any kind of credit for the course, but on the other hand anyone in the world can join in, which should be interesting. I would also love to have some native Japanese join us to help answer questions, etc.
I think that's about it. I have most of the finals graded already, and hope to have grades up by Friday at the latest. Those of you who are going to Japan this summer, please consider blogging about your time there, and post a link to your blog on this list so that we can all follow it and be envious of you. (^-^;
Have a wonderful summer, and I hope to see you all on campus next year!
