Hello, all. I hope that summer has gotten off to a good start.

I've posted my first attempt at a podcasted grammar note lecture:

You can subscribe to the series via iTunes by clicking on this link:

My plan is to create one of these for each grammar note (and possibly kanji section) in the "Genki" textbook, and having students listen to these before coming to class. Instead of lecture, class will be more for answering questions, practice drills, etc.

This is my first attempt at podcasting, so I would really like to hear what you think. If you guys had something like this way back in August, would it have been helpful? Any ideas for improving the podcast?

Thanks,

--Tony

Ooops, sorry, the iTunes link isn't "clickable" from email.

If you want to subscribe to the Genkier series of podcasts, please open iTunes, from the "Advanced" menu select "Subscribe to Podcast", and paste in the following URL:

Sorry for the confusion,

Awesome podcast!!! I thought it was really helpful and seems to
basically cover everything that you did in class on that section.....
Helps with refreshing the stuff I learned during the fall.

This is really cool! I loved the "nouny thing" and "hamster"
references (among others). Would you mind if I shared the link?

It seems a bit cut-and-dry compared to your usual genki attitude in
class, but it was very informative and proved to be a really good
review. I'm looking forward to future installments!

Personal thoughts: The sound effects might be a little much, but the
information was presented cohesively and the lesson flowed well. (And
I envy your ability to time pieces of the lesson and examples
naturally so they don't sound awkward. :D)

Hey, Dana! Thanks for your comments!

Garsh no, definitely share the link! =)
And please tell any friends that might be interested that I will be "opening up" JPNS 1001 in the fall, so if anyone wants to study along with us over the Internet, they're welcome to. That's one of my main reasons for making these podcasts--so that they can hear the lecture part of the course without being in class. I will also be posting all handouts, quizzes, tests, etc online, so people will have access to that, too.

It's interesting that I'm able to make such an ass of myself in class, but am much tamer alone in front of a microphone. Hopefully I'll loosen up as I get more used to this, but I'm a little bit self conscious still.

I'm not sure about the sound effects, either. I just finished recording podcast #2, and will probably have way less, if any, in that one. I want to keep musical intros and outros, though, but need better material. Today I've been emailing Japanese indy bands, asking them if they will let me use clips of their music. I want the podcasts to help introduce bits of contemporary Japanese culture. If anyone knows any Japanese bands who would like some exposure, please let me know! =)

Indie bands? Now you've got me curious. :'D

I have a list of bands sitting in the forefront of my mind already and
I can narrow the list down to a few (appropriate ones) that might be
interested in the exposure, but this is something I've never really
thought about before. I can forward the request to a few folks in
Japan I know that frequent livehouses in Tokyo on a regular basis
(yesyesyes I'm basically living vicariously through them, haha) and
ask them if they know any bands that might be interested.

Are you looking for a particular sound?

Dana,

Wonderful! I don't know if the list needs to be narrowed down... I've emailed a few bands, and haven't had much luck so far. I think that most people are suspicious that I'm just trying to make a buck off of their work, or they are overly paranoid about copyright issues and the like. In this case, a shotgun approach might be better than sniping. =)

I'm not looking for a particular sound--I'm more interested in a variety of sounds. That being said, anything *too* far from mainstream (death metal, hardcore punk...) might be put some people off, and I want the appeal to be as broad as possible.

Thanks for your help! Let me know if anyone seems interested, and of course feel free to give them my email address, the Google groups URL, etc.
