As I said at our last meeting, I will not be able to attend our final meeting tonight because I'm on vacation at my brother's in Virginia.
Having worked with you all over the past couple months, I want to say I appreciate how much you all care about the future of JP, and I appreciate all the conversations in which many took unexpected positions on all kinds of issues. While many times I was frustrated, I appreciate the work we all did and, if I were present, would vote to pass the report. If I can vote in abstentia, I vote to pass the report.
I am deeply frustrated by the members who resigned. While they will not vote on the report, and have decried the legitimacy of this committee as well as the JPNC, their voices and their work are absolutely a part of the report. To say the report, or the committee, does not include their voices or does not represent a diversity of perspectives is simply untrue. To me, their resignations re-iterated only one thing: their willingness to give up on their community, and on a democratic process, when their personal wants are in seeming conflict with their neighbors' needs.
I look forward to the conversations this report starts. I hope Whole Foods will take seriously the couple thousand documented voices who have major concerns with their arrival, and respect the public and transparent process this neighborhood council has gone through to gather concerns.
Thanks,
Ben Mauer
