Hi All,

Attached is the work so far on the past/current/future availability of food in Hyde/Jackson, including an attempt to evaluate the healthy, sustainable and affordable options.  I know breaking food into those three categories is a little tricky, but I hope my definitions will meet with enough approval for our very quick-and-dirty ad hoc report benchmarking purposes.

I did my very best to incorporate others' input (primarily Jamey's and Monica's so far).  Not all citations are there yet, and I suspect it will need to be shortened a fair bit.  As you can see, we still need to do a little on-the-ground research to make it all come together.  Feedback on this area in particular would be very helpful, especially what might be 5-10 items we could use as a proxy for the availability of Latino-focused culturally appropriate foods. I look forward to hearing feedback tonight!

(Also, I am having trouble accessing the google docs, so cannot post there.  Maybe someone can help me figure out why tonight?)

Hello Judy,

This looks great!  Here are my comments:

On the top of pg. 2 you ask for some help presenting this data.  I assume that part of the problem may be that data is not available for Hyde/Jackson specifically?

On pg. 3 where you list the grocery markets I would either take Whole Foods out or add Compare Foods.  I don't have a strong preference but I think taking Whole Foods out and then adding a sentence at the end that references both stores as proposed makes the most sense to me.

Your menu on pg. 4 looks great to me - certainly much healthier than the SNAP menu on the next page.  Are you looking for suggestions on fruits and vegetables? This isn't my area of expertise but I'm happy to make suggestions if you would find it helpful.  For the culturally appropriate menu, perhaps we could start with your list on the top of pg. 3 (mango and other tropical fruits, yucca, platanos, cilantro, fresh and dried chiles, rice, beans) and others could add to it.  I think the comparison shopping you are proposing will be a really important segment of the report!

As far as local and sustainable are concerned, it may be worth mentioning what Whole Foods proposed in their letter, mainly "Once we officially open our doors, we will also try to support these local producers and many others by carrying as many local products as we can."

This looks great so thanks again for your work on it and please let me know how else I can help!

Steve
