I agree with the Gerardo  as I also have driven 3 1/2 hrs to Scranton PA last year, Drove to Cleveland earlier this yr (7 1/2 hrs) to see Rocket Scientists. I also will be driving 2 1/2 hr to CT and 3 hrs to Harrisburg Pa next month to see AFJP, so I am spending alot of time driving to support the band and own every recording that Asia has put out.

PS I will be taking alot of pictures so look for them next month

All this come down to promoters. If a promoter in your area doesn't
think AFJP will be a good draw, then they will not bring them. It's as
simple as that. I don't understand why fans don't understand this.
This may explain why they have been playing the multi-band festival
circuit instead of doing an extensive proper tour on their own. This
costs a lot of money. I'm sure John Payne would like to play in every
city that there is, but this is not on his end, it's on the promoters
end. You as a fan have to do your assignment and if you want to see
them live, try to go to your nearest city when they play live. That's
what I've done in the last 8 years and have seen them 6 times. When I
lived in Puerto Rico I travelled to New York, took a train to Trenton,
NJ and saw them at the Classic Rock Festival 2002 (I remember John and
Geoff been impressed by that when they asked). Now, I live in Orlando,
FL and drove to St. Petersburg (an hour drive) when they played at
Ribfest last November, and in April, 2004 I drove to Hollywood, FL to
see them play at Gulfstream Park when they played there.

As for the UK, I don't know how much demand for AFJP there is if you
consider that the Original Asia have been playing sold out gigs every
year over there since they reunited in 2006. Maybe a festival like
Firefest, which is a festival for melodic rock acts would make better
sense for AFJP. But all of that could change if 'Architect of Time'
becomes succesful salewise. Then maybe, promoters would take notice
and you could see AFJP playing in more venues. But fans have to do
their end by buying their albums and actually going to their shows
when they come close to you. Best Regards,

Gerardo (Crusader)

I agree with Andy, we could do with some UK dates. I live in Essex where there are a number of suitable venues, but I'm quite happy to travel to London, as the gigs I go to are in the ratio of about 60% London / 40% Essex. There are a lot of rock fans in this part of the world and a John Payne & Co visit would be welcomed.                                                                                                                                                Look forward to the new albums (and of course a short tour here wouldn't do any harm in promoting them!).

Very good show. A little harder than I expected (not a complaint). After the show the guys stuck around and chatted and signed things with the fans.

>>I'll be seeing them in a week from this Thursday in Southern Indy.<<

Jamie,

I've never missed an Asia gig in Indiana (well, JP's Asia anyway), but it looks like I'm going to miss this one.

For one thing, AFJP does not even START until 11PM, which would make it too late for my wife (also a big AFJP fan) and I to make the 2 hour drive back home.

I also found the following on the Festival's website..

"Admission: $40 per person (you must be a member of a recognized state motorcyclists rights organization, and show proof, to attend. ABATE of Indiana membership available at the gate: $35 single, $55 couple). No one under 18 allowed, everyone must show ID. Parking: cars and trucks $10; trailers $5; campers and buses $75; tent camping and motorcycle parking included with admission."

...Not sure about you, but I am NOT a member of a recognized state motorcycle club, and it does not say that the ABATE membership counts towards your admission fee. In other words, if I am adding this up correctly, it would cost my wife and me $145.00 just to attend ($40 per person admission, $55 for a "couples" membership, & $10 for parking), and if you start adding in Hotel and travel it becomes twice that. While I love the band, those prices are just a little too steep for my wallet at the moment...Eventhough it's a farther drive I'm thinking about going to The Crestwood, Illinois show instead. The Geensborg, Indiana show last year was one of the best concerts I've seen and I definitely want to get out and support AFJP at at least one of the shows on this tour.

I saw a lively, fun show by Asia featuring John Payne at American MusicFest in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, last night. I thought the audience was about 1,000, more toward the end as people arrived for the fireworks that followed the concert. It was a happy crowd even though not everyone had heard of Asia before. The concert and fireworks came at the end of a 3-day music festival that extended for a mile along the banks of the Susquehanna River.

I put photos online: http://www.rickaster.com/photo/afjp2009/  The first few pictures are from the sound check.

Hi Rick. Thanks for posting the pics and I wish I could have attended.

I'm curious as to how Mitch Perry fared filling in for Guthrie? Also, do you happen to remember the set list? Any new songs from the upcoming album?

Thanks for the compliments on the photos.

The Harrisburg show was 1 set, around 100 minutes. I didn't take notes, but to me, some highlights were:

"Long Way From Home" the opening song, big, epic, driving sound, just huge
"Only Time Will Tell" had a couple of new twists, I thought
"Silent Nation"
"Go" was the best performance I've seen of that song
"Military Man"
an instrumental mini-set performed by Erik and Jay, it felt like 12 minutes long — just the two of them sound bigger than most bands
"Days Like These" was an especially good fit with Mitch's playing on guitar
"Desire" John explained this song had something to do with a novel I haven't read
"Heat of the Moment" as the finale

There wasn't a chance for an encore as most of the audience rushed off to get a closer view of the fireworks, which followed the concert, but were several blocks upstream. There were no songs from the new album.

How did Mitch Perry do in only his second show? Mitch is a star, that's the best way to put it. He was spot-on, flashy, sometimes playful in his playing. His skills on electric guitar are everything you would hope for in someone with his resume (Cher, Edgar Winter, Aerosmith ...  http://www.myspace.com/mitchperry ). His playing and wild rock 'n roll onstage persona give the band a boost of energy. Mitch is, in my opinion, an extra reason to go see the band on this tour if you get the chance.

It was a very exciting show to see and even after the 2 hour drive home it took a long time for me to settle down and get to sleep.

I was at the Harrisburg show and I really thought they were great. I
got there early and watched them set up, go through their soundcheck
(which was really cool). I saw the original band last year in
Harrisburg, and one of the things that I noticed is that JP and crew
really have a lot of fun on stage together. All of them smiled as the
night went on and you really could see that they enjoy playing
together. Mitch Perry really fit in with the band and was quite a
character during the soundcheck. I dare say that Asia Featuring John
Payne was much better than the Four Original Members of Asia. Coming
from me, a big John Wetton fan, that is saying something. After the
show my wife and I talked with the band for a few minutes and I scored
JP's The Passion CD signed by the band. Great night.
