Hello all!
We're finally finding some time to dedicate jPlayer. Apologies for the absence in recent months - we really have been very busy on other projects and are likely to continue be so at least for the next few months.
That said, we took afterster's comment on maintaining jPlayer to heart
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/jplayer/XzsibB5QLz0 and yes we think we do need more maintainers.
To kick the community process off we feel it would be good to discuss potential plans for the next major version of jPlayer - jPlayer 3! So far we have:
1. Remove the jQuery/Zepto dependency
2. Decoupling the jPlayer core from the visual layer.
3. Remove the Flash fallback and related code (?)
4. Someone has also suggested "some cleaner API stuff, like accessing the data object in the instance."
We'd love to hear all your ideas and suggestions! Some of our best ideas come the community - an example of this is the jPlayer.injector
https://github.com/happyworm/jPlayer.injector/blob/dev/README.md which is based on Nathan Loyer;s jPlayer-Autofill. This development version is a sneak peek of how we aim to split the visual side from the core. The idea being that you define where jPlayer audio or video skins appear using the standard HTML5 syntax, specify a selector and a skin template and you are good to go.
Since we started developing jPlayer the media player landscape has radically changed. We did not commercialise jPlayer, preferring instead to keep it all MIT Licensed and foster a community around building a better player, the only exception to this are the skins we sell on the jPlayer.it website. Our vision is to create a marketplace for jPlayer skins and build up a skinning scene similar to Winamp's in its hey-day. We'd like to open up the possibility of creating and selling skins to the whole community and with the advent of (more or less) universal support for technology such as SVG and the Web Audio API, that could be a lot of fun!
The idea would be to make jPlayer sustainable. Since we launched the jPlayer store at the end of 2013 we have made around £6,500 ($9,600) so we still have a fair way to go on that one! (That said we only really have one skin!)
Finally we'd like to address the issue of maintainers, please do keep your pull requests coming and if there's anyone out there interested in helping maintaining jPlayer or even (long shot) sponsoring its development please do make yourselves known.
I'm pretty sure most of you would agree that it's an exciting time to be working with audio and video on the web and I'm also pretty sure as a community we can build something special, so please don't be shy in replying to this thread and getting involved! All comments are very welcome!

PS jPlayer is 100% open source and MIT licensed. If anyone feels like contributing to jPlayer you can do that here
