Job Posting: Director of Lifespan Faith Development (Consulting)
Position: 30-hour/week, 10 month/year Director of Lifespan Faith Development (DLFD) at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston (UUCR), Virgina
Job Description Summary: The Director of Lifespan Faith Development (DLFD) (Consulting) will lead the faith development (religious education) program for all ages at UUCR, including children, Jr. and Sr. High youth programs and adult education. Working with the Minister, committees involved in children's and adult programming and the Youth Advisors, the DLFD will facilitate a learning environment conducive to the spiritual growth of all church members.
The consulting role reflects UUCR's current two-year period of transition as an Interim Minister leads our process of renewing our vision, strengthening our stewardship, and preparing for new growth and professional leadership. The consulting DLFD will work closely with the Interim Minister in this transitional period. The consulting position is a 30-hour-a-week, 10-month-a-year position with an option to renew at the end of the 2013-14 church fiscal year or transition to a settled Director of Lifespan Faith Development upon agreement of the UUCR Board, the Minister and the DLFD. The position may extend over 12 months in the future, as funding becomes available.
The DLFD will report to the Minister and is ultimately accountable to the Minister and the UUCR Board and will supervise a part-time RE Assistant and a Nursery Attendant.
Our Congregation: UUCR has provided a liberal religious community in Reston, Virginia since 1970. Reston is a planned community located approximately 20 miles from Washington, D.C., which has attracted a growing and diverse population and offers excellent schools, public transportation and cultural opportunities. Our church has a tradition of social service in our community and the larger Northern Virginia region and is a Welcoming Congregation and Green Sanctuary. The metropolitan Washington area has a large number of UU congregations, and the Joseph Priestley District offers many collegial opportunities for religious professionals. UUCR currently has 177 members registered with the UUA, with another 14 new members having joined since January 2013. There are 80 children registered in our RE program from nursery through high school, with an average Sunday attendance of about 40.
Qualifications: Because the Director holds a position of leadership within the church community, the DLFD considers her/himself as a Unitarian Universalist and is expected to model and articulate the denomination’s liberal religious philosophy. The DLFD embodies and teaches UU values and has knowledge of UU history, polity and theology (or is willing to take courses to attain proficiency in these areas). The position requires independence, initiative, the ability to encourage others, as well as knowledge of UU RE philosophy and organizational, administrative and communication skills. The DLFD must be comfortable speaking to the congregation, have a rapport with children, and possess the necessary skills to use the church’s software programs for maintaining records. Credentialed DRE preferred but not required. Background in education strongly preferred.
Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with experience and will be consistent with UUA Fair Compensation Guidelines. The position includes 15 days (prorated) of annual paid leave (personal or vacation time) and 10 days (prorated) of annual sick leave. Benefits include health insurance and disability insurance; professional expenses; and participation in the UUA retirement plan, if eligible.
