Summary Description
All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, DC, seeks an Interim Director of Children’s Religious Education to lead our vibrant children’s education ministry through a period of growth and change. Working with other staff and lay leaders, the Interim DCRE will direct and manage the daily functioning of a program of over 300 children. Furthermore, the interim DCRE will manage two specific interim tasks: managing a space transition as we renovate our building, and helping facilitate a vision for the future of All Souls education and family ministries.
Term: The 1 ½ year term begins January 2, 2014 and continues through July 2015.
Core Qualities and Competencies
Ø Ability to balance the dual roles of an interim: serving as consultant and attending to the administrative details of a large and complex program.
Ø Experience as a religious educator, preferably of a large program, with a demonstrated love of children and families.
Ø Ability and experience facilitating change and transition, while exhibiting a stable, non-anxious presence.
Ø Ability and experience working collaboratively with lay leaders and staff.
Ø Ability and experience supervising staff.
Ø Ability and experience working in a multiracial/multicultural community.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
1. Direct and manage the children’s religious education ministry and its many programs, maintaining its existing high quality while bringing new and innovative ideas.
Ø Guide and oversee curriculum for the religious education of children and youth.
Ø Direct and administer the RE program for children and youth
Ø Supervise the recruitment, safety clearances, training and support for teachers, facilitators, advisors and other volunteers.
Ø Provide leadership for weekly children’s chapel and monthly Story for All Ages.
Ø Provide leadership and support to the Religious Education Committee.
Ø Maintain policies and practices that support the religious education program.
Ø Develop and track annual budget and current and long-term space use needs for the program, including issues related to the on-going capital renovation.
Ø Articulate and promote children’s religious education through church communication venues.
Ø Supervise part-time RE Assistant, Youth Ministry Coordinator and two nursery care providers.
Ø Coordinate, prepare parents for, and co-officiate at child dedication ceremonies.
Ø Provide leadership for Coming of Age and High School Graduation and other rites of passages.
Ø Serve as staff
liaison to the annual intergenerational Weekend on the Bay church camp.
2. Direct and Manage Interim Tasks
Ø Help manage the children’s religious education program’s transition to temporary space (likely within our current building) during our capital renovation, and then into newly renovated children’s religious education space.
Ø Working with an outside consultant, guide the church through a process of envisioning the future of its educational ministry and ministry to children and families.
Compensation and Reporting
This is a full-time salaried position that will initially report to the Senior Minister and later to the Program Life Minister.
