Dear Michael,

Have you ever heard of Use Cases, UML or the Rational Unified Process (RUP)?
Have you heard of the "3 Amigos" ? If you answer "Yes" to any of these you
should know who Ivar Jacobson is.

On Friday 28th October the JCSE is honoured to be hosting Ivar Jacobson at
Wits University. He will present a talk entitled:

Liberating the Essence from the Burden of the Whole: A Renaissance in Lean
Thinking

This is the keynote presentation that he gave at the recent Agile Business
Conference (ABC 2011) in London. He will also be discussing the SEMAT
initiative, which aims to re-found software engineering as a discipline
based on solid theory, proven principles and best practices.

See details of Ivar Jacobson's talk below.

Also note that time is running out for those of you thinking of submitting
an application for our very popular "Continued Professional Development"
(CPD) program in 2012. This programme has made it possible for people with
appropriate work experience to achieve a formal qualification in software
engineering from Wits University. Applications close on 31st October 2011
and spaces are limited.

Best Regards
Prof Barry Dwolatzky
Director: JCSE at Wits University

Talk: Liberating the Essence from the Burden of the Whole: A Renaissance in
Lean Thinking by Ivar Jacobson

Who is Ivar Jaconson?

Dr. Ivar Jacobson is a father of components and component architecture, use
cases, the Unified Modeling Language and the Rational Unified Process. With
Grady Booch and James Rumbaugh he has made a huge contribution to the field
of software engineering over the past decade. He has contributed to modern
business modeling and aspect-oriented software development. However, all
this is history. Lately he has been working on how to deal with methods and
tools in a super-light and agile way. He has developed a practice concept
that is now being adopted by both developers and tool vendors. Now he is one
of the leaders of a worldwide network Semat, which has agreed to
revolutionize software development.

On Friday 28th October the JCSE will be hosting Ivar Jacobson at Wits
University. He will present a talk entitled:

Liberating the Essence from the Burden of the Whole: A Renaissance in Lean
Thinking

"In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before
me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the
rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other
eyes as mine see it."-Michelangelo

So how can a 500 year old quotation be relevant to business today? Well,
you'll be surprised.
The concept of a "kernel" representing the essence of something is a good
starting point for most things you build. You start lean and you stay lean
throughout the life of what you build. The idea of a kernel has many
practical applications in today's business: 1) designing an agile business,
2) building products using agile techniques, 3) re-engineering your method
or way of working.

Proven in many practical situations, the kernel concept provides the ability
to scale up the use of agile approaches whilst maintaining control &
visibility. It is now being considered for adoption by standards bodies such
as the Object Management Group to enable light weight, usable, agile
approaches to knowledge management.

The session will introduce the key concepts of a kernel along with some
practical applications through case studies.

After this talk Dr Jacobson will introduce a new initiative called "Semat" -
The Software Engineering Method and Theory Initiative (Semat) SEMAT aims to
re-found software engineering based on a solid theory, proven principles and
best practices that include; a kernel of widely-agreed elements, extensible
for specific uses, addressing both technology and people issues.

A finger-lunch will be provided.
Date: Friday 28th October 2011
Time: 12:00 to 14:00
Venue: Professional Development Hub, (PDH), Wits East Campus
Cost: R300 (payable at the door) - Discounts available to students and
academics

Continued Professional Development (CPD) Programme in Software Engineering

The Continued Professional Development (CPD) Programme in Software
Engineering is a 2 year part-time programme of courses from the Joburg
Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) and Wits University's School of
Electrical & Information Engineering. It is aimed at creating a pool of
highly skilled software engineers capable of filling senior positions in the
ICT industry.

The CPD Programme in Software Engineering introduces students to key aspects
of the software development lifecycle. By the end of the Programme students
will understand and be able to apply key concepts and principles in software
engineering (SE) and software project management (SPM). Courses aim to
present an up-to-date and modern perspective, and are taught by experienced
university lecturers and industry experts.

For more information: http://jcse.org.za/courses/cpd-programme-2012
Registration for 2012 closes on 31 October 2011.

Agile forum - : The Kanban Method for Software Development

The past several years has seen the emergence of several next-generation
software development frameworks, such as Scrum and XP. These frameworks are
focussed on improving delivery, increasing agility, and creating
sustainability in software development. For decades, the use of Kanban has
enabled Toyota's Lean, Just-In-Time processes, which are world-renowned.
This technology has been adapted for use in software development, as well as
other domains. The presentation will cover the Kanban philosophy, what
Kanban is, how it differs to other major frameworks for development, and how
it can help your organisation.

Speaker:
Joshua Lewis completed his MEng in Information Engineering at Wits in 2005.
Since then he has worked in software development in a variety of companies
including startups and corporates; and in various roles including senior
developer and change agent. He specialises in Microsoft technologies but
believes that development processes and philosophies transcend specific
technologies. He has a passion for understanding software development at a
deep level, and to improve the industry and the lot of developers through
that understanding. Joshua currently consults and freelances independently,
and is developing a website which he hopes to turn into a business.

Startup Session

Three Gauteng-based entrepreneurs - Mikkel, David and Jarrod -piloted three
"Startup Sessions" in 2010. The concept is a fantastic one and we at the
JCSE are keen to support this initiative by providing a venue and some
logistical support. We will be holding the last "Startup Weekend" for 2011
on the 29-30 October at Wits University. So - if you're a budding
entrepreneur - save these dates!

The basic goal of the weekend is to start at least one company.

We will do this by gathering a group of people that are all interested in
becoming IT entrepreneurs. Those participants that have a business idea will
get a chance to pitch the idea (the elevator pitch). People then volunteer
their weekend to help bring an idea that they believe in towards prototype
stage.

We believe this can be done, because a weekend is short enough that people
stay energized and long enough that a significant amount of work can be done
by 5-10 people (both technical and non-technical) that work on an idea they
believe in.

Anyone attending must be available for the ENTIRE WEEKEND. There will
however be a 1-hour session from 9-10 on Saturday 29 October to help you
decide whether you want to stay for the rest of the weekend.

If you are interested, kindly register at
http://jcse.org.za/register/event-registrations?eventid=1385
. We will then contact you to give you details of all arrangements. Numbers
will be limited and we will work on a first-come basis.

Venue: Wits University (venue details to be confirmed)
Date: 29-30 October 2011
Cost: Free, but you will be asked to contribute to the cost of lunch
