For me who grew up in the 80s and 90s, Vijay Super was a prized possession. Years before Bajaj became near-ubiquitous, Vijay gave Indians the joy of scooter riding. It was the first time, for many middle-class families, that their dreams of owning a vehicle could be realised.

My childhood days occulted between the polluted roads of NCR before Sahib Singh Verma and Sheila Dixit even dreamt of replacing the diesel drive transport DTC buses to CNG. It was only in the late 80s i shifted my location to God's own country for higher education. Kerala in those days was pristine with virgin bounty.

That's where I learnt to ride my first scooter. It was a Vijay Super which my father bought for a princely amount of seven thousand rupees that too a second hand one. Not that we couldn't afford a brand new scooter, but little would you all know the waiting time for a scooter in those days was anywhere between 5 to 8 years. I recollect petrol in those days of Pre Gulf war era were around 6-7 rupees a litre.

The scooter carried with it an aura of safety over its macho cousin "the motorcycle" (in those days a Rajdoot). Then there were his weaker siblings, we called him by many names a Vicky, a moped, Hero Puch or a TVS 50. In many ways, a scooter comes with a sense of value and safety. The concept of "Stepney" gave Indians a sense of value add (more for less) something which we assumed to be our entitlement for free of cost along with a scooter purchase. We do the same thing while buying vegetables "Bhaiya Zara dhania and kadi Patta free dena". Ironically i have seen these Stepney being seldom used. It was more like an extra accessory to give the scooter a feminine posterior. Vijay super and lamby150 fixed it flat, Bajaj made it on a verticle stand giving the chetak a sense of round buttocks, LML Vespa justified it by hiding it inside her underbelly.

Thus the rounded soft shape looks of the scooter made her a domesticated beast for performing household duties. If a bike sees the road a lady to make love hugging the curves of the tar, the scooter followed the Indian value system by maintaining a safe distance. Does the bike pillion rider seem to fuse into the driver ... remember the college days? dropping a girl back home on a bike was always a matter of pleasure but if it was a scooter we were smart enough to outsource that task to uncles or a cousin. In short, if bikes were Hrithik Roshan, a scooter was a humble Pankaj Tripathi.

With the 90s, Vijay super lost its charm and Bajaj walked the ramp. The seats were stuffed with more cushion, The Stepney became a moving hoarding. The rear seats were better customised with a small foot stand to stabilise the centre of gravity of oversized aunties. Delhiites installed an additional seat for kids. They called it "chunnu-munnu de pappa di gaddi" and soon Indians swooned with the slogan of 'Humara Bajaj'. Bajaj ruled Indian roads for a decade coming out with various permutations like bajaj classic, chetak, Priya or even a Bajaj cub. One needed a little strength to hold this domesticated beast to tilt 45 degrees, pull out the choke liver before a winter morning kick start. It did make mathematical sense in some way as we know any projectile will reach maximum range if launched with a 45-degree tilt.

by the late 90s, liberalisation took over, the fairer sex showed their presence on-road and the "45-degree projectile kick strat" theory of Bajaj failed. Mazhar Khan became the brand ambassador of India's first "electronic start" scooter. Kinetic honda. It was a symbolic representation of metrosexuality India was about to discover with the millennium.
