Asmid-May arrives, the heatwave and soaring temperatures are sweeping across Delhi and other parts of India. Amidst this scorching heat, the Indian Meteorological Department has been issuing alerts about heatwaves in various regions, advising people to take necessary precautions to stay safe. Additionally, considering the impact of severe temperatures and the heatwave on children's health, summer breaks from school and university are announced every year to provide some relief.

After much deliberation and back-and-forth, we realised that to start any holiday homework project, you need some basic supplies: a few scrapbooks, colourful pens, and decorative items. The next question was where to source quality materials for your homework, given the baffling abundance of items on the market. In the mind of a teacher- a little holiday homework never hurt anyone! In order to develop public speaking in class, a holiday project was given with simple instructions- 1. Choose any topic you like, 2. create a display board to represent the key aspects of that topic, and 3. prepare a 3 minute talk about it.

The students left school on the last Friday before the holiday excited and full of original ideas. Upon returning I was probably just as excited to listen to them all. Projects ranged from, The Seashore, Space, Horse Riding, Thunder, Lava Lamps and Ocean Depths to name just a few.

With some guidelines on how to build a project display, the children exceeded my expectations. No doubt with a little help from home- but for a 7-8 year old this is expected and it also encourages an active learning environment at home.

As you can see from the photos, the guidelines were followed- bright colourful titles, easy to read text and keywords. A mix of pictures that may include, drawings, painting, photos, print outs or magazine cutouts. Most importantly, a clear order to the the layout and flow of information.

The Displays were amazing and now decorate the hallways around the Primary block, but the main part of the holiday homework was to prepare a presentation. I had told them a 3 minute minimum was expected- in truth 2 minutes would have been a good start for a first time presentation.

I had informed the class that they would be marked on 3 main categories- confidence in which they spoke, including they volume they spoke at and body posture (no hiding behind the boards or speaking to the floor!). The flow and order of content- did they have an introduction, logical steps that explained their topic and were keywords/technical words made clear to those that may not understand them. Marks were also awarded to students that could demonstrate true understanding for their topic. Q and A at the end of the talks allowed the student to prove if they did really understood their project or if it was just memorised sentences.

To summarize the quality of the presentations, no student spoke for less than 4 minutes! Filler words and pauses such as, umms and ahhs were almost non existent- they had practised and they were all prepared.

One presentation about lava lamps even included a step by step instructional demonstration on how to build you own at home. A mix of water, oil, food colours and fizzy Alka-Seltzers were all you needed. A volunteer from the class helped with the presentation and the 'how-to' was a great addition.

I have set up a few presentations similar to this, but not with my new students yet, I think it is time for them to demonstrate their knowledge on some of our recent topics. Did you provide them with a success criteria?

Allow students to have some choice and autonomy in their assignments. Ask them to select the format (e.g. written format in the online medium, oral format in the offline medium) in which they want to submit their homework. When they feel a sense of ownership, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged. This is how you become a 21st-century teacher who uses differentiated learning.

When children get appreciated for their achievements or good behaviour, it boosts their self-confidence. It encourages them to repeat those actions. This creates a positive learning environment. They are more likely to deliver results when appreciated for their actions. Hence, you can celebrate their achievements via small rewards, recognition or a display of their work in class.

Do you remember the joy of gathering around a table, rolling a dice, and playing Snakes & Ladders? As kids and even as adults, many of us love spending our time playing board games.

Now, picture becoming the teacher that integrates school homework with a board game! Students can design board games and incorporate artistic elements into their theme, board layout, cards, etc. They can become architects of fun and learning!

In this digital age, where mobile and laptop screens often dominate, the majority of the students lead sedentary lifestyles. School homework which encourages physical activity, can be a game-changer! And what better than maintaining a physical activity journal that helps with it? Additionally, it will also promote the healthy habit of having an active lifestyle among students.

Getting students to journal can seem tough, but with the right motivation & incentives, it can be done. Additionally, this can also be a fun summer holiday homework, where students can keep track of their activities all summer!

Encourage them to document their daily exercise triumphs. Push them to go beyond their own records! Ask them to explore science concepts- BMI, heart and pulse rates, diet, and nutrition!

Once you do this, exercise will not just be about breaking a sweat anymore. It will also be something that incorporates learning!
