To NENA members, lovers of the Joy Avenue Pathway, and other interested folks,

I'm writing to ask for your help.  As some of you know, I've had to set aside a lot of things over the last few months to restore my health after suffering a back injury. This included organizing Joy Avenue work parties.  We usually have our first work party sometime in May or early June, so we've got some catching up to do.   For those of you that are new to the neighborhood, the pathway links Bethel to Tullis streets  along the Joy Avenue right-of-way.  The trail is located in the 1600 block of Bethel Street about 1.5 blocks north of the SF Bakery.

My recent visits to the pathway and garden have saddened me some. The weeds are growing tall and the blackberries are flexing their barbed muscles again. And, it's clear that despite all this, the garden is thriving.  All it needs is some TLC and a bit of hard work to fully reveal itself again.   Although I won't be able to do any heavy lifting for a while, I'm now ready to get back to joining with you to do some real-world, hands-on community building again.

There are lots of ways you can help...

Join us at our upcoming work parties on Sunday, July 20th and Saturday July 26th from 10 am to 1 pm.   Wear sturdy shoes, and bring a pitchfork or shovel, pruners, work gloves, and a wheelbarrow (if you can) to the work party. If you don't have tools or work gloves, we'll have some available for you to use.  Come dance with your neighbors as they do the blackberry bash and the thistle stomp.

Cardboard, cardboard, and more cardboard...
We need a lot of cardboard to mulch the garden.  We've started a small pile to the side of the driveway at the Tullis end of the trail.  Please help turn this pile into a mountain.  Just drop your flattened boxes on top of the boxes that are already there.  If you have a truck or a van and you're interested in doing some serious cruising for corrugated, that would be an extraordinary gift.  Send me a note if you'd like someone to ride shotgun.

Quench the thirst
We need a few volunteers to water the very thirsty berry plants from now until the end of September.  Just a few hours would make a huge difference.  If you're interested, send me a note and we'll set you up.

Building pathways and gardens to create a safer, more beautiful, more resilient, and better connected community
You and your neighbors have generously contributed your creativity, talents, expertise, and thousands of hours of volunteer labor to transform what was once a debris clogged vacant lot into the beautiful Joy Avenue Pathway and Edible Forest Garden.   This pathway is just one of many neighborhood projects that help make our neck of the woods such an awesome place to live.  These include the Mission Creek Nature Park, Friendly Grove Park, new sidewalks and trails, and lots more.   Our newest project is the Garrison Garden which is also along the Joy Avenue right-of-way in the 1600 block of Garrison Street. They are having a work party on Saturday, July 19 starting at 11 am.  Contact our newest board member Brian Mark at cresc...@gmail.com if you'd like to learn more.

If you'd like to learn more about the Joy Avenue Pathway check out the pathway web page.  There you'll find our new Garden of Eatin' Plant List which includes detailed descriptions and photos of the more than 250 edible plants you'll find along the trail.

I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood.

With joy and gratitude,

To NENA members and other interested folks,

Wow!  What a glorious weekend it's been in our beautiful neck of the woods.  Already Spring is busting out all over.  To keep ahead of the growth that's getting an early start this year, we've scheduled our first  Joy Avenue Pathway and Edible Forest Garden work party on Saturday, March 21 from 10 am to 1 pm. This is a great opportunity to give back to your neighborhood, meet some great people, and help the garden grow.   Even if you can only spare an hour, we'd welcome your help!

At this work party, we'll be bogeying down to bust some blackberries, trash some thistle, and lay down more cardboard and wood chips to keep the canary grass and other weeds away.  Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and please bring a pitchfork or shovel, work gloves, and a wheelbarrow (if you can) to the work party. If you don't have tools or work gloves, we'll have some available for you to use.  The pathway links Bethel to Tullis streets along the Joy Avenue right-of-way and is located in the 1600 block of Bethel Street about 1.5 blocks north of the SF Bakery.
