Hi

Our Yahoo Messenger is blocked. I had complained for this even before. Dun understand the illegal aspect for this application. Other websites which come into use but has been blocked are: Youtube, Torrentz.com and anywhere through which we cud have downloaded useful videos.

For example: I needed some videos on Environment issues but was unable to download them and hence suffered and had to wait for the firewall to be lifted.

Hope this time the complaints would be registered and necessary action be taken.

we need to look for lots of images for assignments.. most of them are blocked. google image page shows only 1 or 2 pictures out of several on 1 page.. how can we work?

The fact that google images is also blocked, ie, only a few images show up, is an absolute impediment. Moreover, it is not humanly possible to list ALL the sites that we want unblocked. More often than not, we cannot navigate to certain useful sites while looking for information. Flickr and Picasaweb have also been blocked and I cannot find the rationale behind it. Why cant the IT department JUST block the X-rated and 'objectionable' sites and let us surf everything else?

I enquired regarding this issue. This is gonna be there for atleast 3-4 days, its not a permanent thing, for the moment the firewall is open between 5:30-9:00 am.....

They said tht the firewall wud only be lifted for 4 hours and that is from 5 am to 10 am.. n dun mistake the am and pm thing.. its for morning only... we shud tell them that this will not work but if one person goes it wudnt work out.. we need to go in large numbers

The Firewall has been put up as there are problems uploading The WIRE every day.

Hence so as to increase the uploading speed of WIRE the Firewall is up.

Will sort it out with The Wire Team and Faculty tomorrow and the Firewall should be removed by tomorrow - 14th August night.

this is totally uncalled for. So much of my work is now pending because of this firewall and I am sure many others are facing this problem as well. I have nothing against WIRE but you cannot jeopardize other people's work on such pretexts. In future please bear in mind that just because it does not have the SIMC tag doesnt mean that our work is not important to us. And still if such actions are inevitable, atleast inform us in advance regarding the same!

The Firewall will be taken down everyday from 5-30 pm till 9 am w.e.f. 14th August,'10

P.S. - 1). A Clarification. The Firewall was not put up at the behest of the WIRE team - the members of which were not even clearly informed. The Firewall was put up throughout on a trial basis by the SIMC Internet Admin. (for the team which wasnt even informed of the same)

2). The internet speed might take a hit now!

3). Escalation Policy - W.r.t. all problems kindly first mail to Deepali ma'am..then if the problem is not resolved write a mail to Director Sir. But do follow a proper escalation procedure.

I do not know why people are looking around for others to put the blame on for their own lack of efficiency, but since this time the has been an attempt to throw slander on something that is dear to me, I'am hard pressed to hit the reply all button.

I would like to inform both the batches that the SIMC Wire Team was not even aware of the firewall being put up to facilitate our uploading. And to tell you the truth, the firewall has had no effect on the upload speed whatsoever, it is still as slow as ever and had it been slower it would have been going backwards. Even we have been adversely effected by the Firewall, websites that we usually use for research have not been opening and thus, even we have been hard pressed for information, the speed of whatever opens notwithstanding.

It is a sincere request on behalf of the Wire team that if in the future something is being done to facilitate us, we should at least be informed, if not then we should not be blamed as a last ditch attempt at saving someone's neck.

To those who think that having the SIMC tag makes us disrespect their work, I would only like to say that we have deep respect for all the work that we here at SIMC do, with or without the tag.

To those who think this is a classic case of irresponsibility, let me just say, I agree with you, but the irresponsibility was not ours and hence, we are not to be blamed or to be put at the receiving end of undue sarcasm, please limit it to those who misguided you.

At the outset, our apologies for the inconvenience that the firewall has caused everyone. However, the SIMC Wire team had not been informed about this matter regarding the Firewall.

Rest assured that it has caused us a lot of inconvenience too and a lot of our work was hampered by the same. Since the matter had been decided upon by the admin, I assure you that we were not involved in the decision.

Since the firewall has been pulled off with immediate effect, as has been mentioned by Ashwini, I request you to dispel the matter here itself.

Dear WIRE team n others

My intention was not to sling mud at the wire team and I dont think my mail mentions that they are to be blamed for all thats happening. The purpose of my mail was to merely point out that taking such decisions causes us great inconvenience, be it for WIRE or any other official/unofficial reason. As I mentioned earlier, I have nothing against the WIRE. I sincerely request people not to be in a hurry to take things personally.

Thank you Ashwini for dealing with the firewall issue.
