I have had several Galaxy flip phones over the years, with my favorite being the dual screen Galaxy Golden. I literally bought the Galaxy Flip 4 not more ten days ago after I could no longer find consistent cell service on my Galaxy Folder 2. Anyhow, a clam shell / flip phone by design is supposed to be more durable and than a slab device. I figured a new $1000 phone should probably have a shock resistant case, just because you never know what will happen. The phone fell maybe 3 ft off my desk onto an oak hardwood floor and one side of the hinge popped out. The screen is fine from what i can tell but the phone will not open more than 60 degrees.

This is a serious design flaw. Did anyone even test the durability of the hinge on this new device. I wish Samsung had made a 5G version of the Galaxy Golden or the Galaxy Folder. I guess I will try to see if the one year warranty covers this defect.

Despite its name, you actually can't flip the Z Flip open as you did with old flip phones. This is due to the new, rigid hinge that feels far more durable than Galaxy Fold's. It is by far the new foldable phone's most impressive feat. Overall, thanks to Samsung's attempts at improving durability, the folding and unfolding experience feels both smoother and sturdier than its predecessor. The hinge also disappears when the Z Flip is completely opened, giving it a cool symmetry that was somewhat lacking in the Fold.

Likely due to this durability, the new hinge is also a free stop hinge, which means it can be opened and locked in at any range of angle, much like premium notebooks. This allows it to be part-open on flat surfaces. This is a key difference to the Galaxy Fold which had the sides locked to a certain angle when ajar.

Thanks to this, when using the Z Flip, users can take selfies or video chat while half of the phone is in an upright position. The screen is automatically split into two 4-inch screens when the display is folded at an angle, with the top half being used for content and the bottom for additional information -- a feature dubbed Flex Mode.

Just been informed by Samsung repair centre (UK) that because there are scratches on the case of my fold 4 this is apparently the cause of the screen splitting down the middle of the fold line, and so it is not covered by Warranty and i will have to pay 539 for a replacement inner screen! Screens splitting is a known problem, and apparently the fold 5 has a completely new designed hinge to try and stop this! NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. My phone is only 8 months old, and useless already, and Samsung refuse to repair under warranty.

The Spigen GlasTR EZ Fit Tempered Glass Screen Protector comes with an extremely helpful installation kit that ensures precise application. You get two tempered glass screen protectors for the Galaxy Z Flip 4's external display, and also two protective films for the foldable's hinge.

A foldable smartphone (also known as a foldable phone or simply foldable) is a smartphone with a folding form factor. It is reminiscent of the clamshell (or "flip phone") design of many earlier feature phones.[1][2] Some variants of the concept use multiple touchscreen panels on a hinge, while other designs utilise a flexible display. Concepts of such devices date back as early as Nokia's "Morph" concept in 2008, and a concept presented by Samsung Electronics in 2013 (as part of a larger set of concepts utilizing flexible OLED displays), while the first commercially available folding smartphones with OLED displays began to emerge in November 2018.
