This was the 3rd time I purchased a wood scrabble game. The other 2 were absolute junk and was returned. So I paid alot more for this game but did not regret it! Very well made, nice quality board tiles and made from quality wood.

The board looks and feels very well made. Brass hardware and drawer are a nice touch. The height is very comfortable on a dining room table for gameplay. The wood looks beautiful and it stays out as a display item even when we\'re not playing it. The letter tiles had a few defects. One letter was missing the point value. It would be nice if the drawer had room to hold a Scrabble dictionary or if the set included a luxury scrabble dictionary edition. The score sheets are a little confusing in terms of how the ledger is organized so take a good look at where to write each person\'s score and note that there is a spot to tally as you go long. I would have liked to have a pocket inside the scorebook to put old sheets.

1999 to 2001 Defining characteristics of sets for this period:

  • *NEW* Board design now claimed by Hasbro.
  • *NEW* Rule copyright: 1999
  • *NEW* Box top artwork.
The 1999 rules show some mildly interesting modifications, including making "Bingo" the official name for a 7-tile play. They also introduced a huge mistake which would overturn basic Scrabble play if anyone noticed! For a description of the main changes from the 1989 to the 1999 rules see my Changes to the Box Top Rules page. In the claimant information below the rules in the lid, the earlier copyright years are tossed: www.scrabble.comSCRABBLE, the associated logo, the design of the distinctive SCRABBLE brand gameboard and the distinctive letter tile designsare trademarks of HASBRO in the United States and Canada. (C)1999 Hasbro, Pawtucket, RI 02862. All Rights Reserved. 04024-I
The game board has been widened by a little over an inch, although the actual playing area is unchanged. The uniform gray background has been replaced with a blotchy swirl of tan and light brown. The copyright claim reads: (C) 1999 HASBRO All Rights Reserved.

There are however a number of non-core variants of scrabble that have boards with different dimensions, including Super Scrabble with a 21x21 board and Scrabble Junior with 11x11, 13x13 and 15x15 variants.
