It seems that we have a decent number of legitimately-interested
players at this point. Enough to start really coalescing everyone
together into a confirmed group and set a date for the first game.

I'm set to DM, and I know for certain that my roommate Tim is set to
play. Then there is Raven, who definitely seems to be on board, and
Dawn, who hasn't been posting here on the group, but who has been
communicating with me via e-mail and wants to play for sure. Now we
have Lena as well, who sounds excited about the game. That's four
players at least, with a number of other "possibles" floating around.
I'd love to have my friend Jimmy round out the group, if he's able
to. Michael is very interested in the Penumbra game, but that won't
be kicking off for a bit, yet. Raven mentioned a roommate who may
want to join, also. There's this Vic fellow, as well, though I
haven't heard back from him recently.

Anyway, I think we're on track to starting the New Wine, Old Wineskins
game quite soon. So I'm calling for characters! Or at the least,
some character ideas, brainstorms, concepts, et cetera. Let's go
ahead and get some discussion going on this here, in the group, so
that everyone can see what the others are thinking and coming up
with. If you have vague, unformed character ideas, go ahead and post
them in this thread now. If you have questions, do the same. If you
want to just go right for it and make a whole character, according to
my guidelines in the Proscenium post, then by all means, I encourage
it!

You can e-mail me privately about this stuff if you really feel that
you need to, but ideally I'd like to see the discussion about the
characters, and scheduling, and whatever else is relevant to the game,
happen here, publically, so that everyone can participate and knows
what's going on.

So, characters? Character ideas? Races, classes, basic background
concepts?

Well, I'm in the middle of transporting a character concept from a
different setting to this one. It's taking a bit, because I'm
converting her from a fairly abstract setting to Forgotten Realms,
which has kind of a lot of information.
However, I know most of the core mechanical stuff for her. Probably
will change my mind repeatedly, but oh well. --

I'm working on a couple of concepts at this point for the campaign.
Haven't decided between the two yet, I want to see what might best fit
in:

The first is a Warforged - a remnant of a long-past war who begins the
adventure having just recovered from extensive physical and mental
damage. I had originally built this guy as a barbarian, but he could
be re-imagined as a fighter or Warlord without much of a stretch.

The second is an Eladrin Wizard - a novice mage who was once
considered to have great potential. While training with a group of
human wizards, he engaged in an experimental ritutal casting which
went awry. Since then, he's been a bit .. 'off'.

That's where I'm at so far. I'm interested to see what everyone else
has working for their characters!

Greetings everyone!

I am working on a SwordMage from Myth Drannor myself. So we have one
Defender Role Character. Also I am leaning more toward the Assault
rather then
the Shielding SwordMage. As it fits my personal playing style better.
This is something I am working closely with our DM on so that it works
out well.

I got the base concept mostly figured out, now it is a matter of
working out the
back-story, filling the blanks and such. Thou I have a strong
background in D&D
I am not strong in 4th Edition, yet. I do have the 3 core books and
both of the
Forgotten Realms books here to help. As well as a wealth of 3.0/3.5
stuff.

I do not want to put the exacts of my character stats up just yet, as
I need
to run a few things past the DM once I get them written up.
Fair warning: This character is going to be strongly based in
Forgotten Realms History
and personal playing history. (The second will become clear once I
start
playing him.) But he should be a fun character to RP with, I hope.

See ya soon!

You're probably aware of this ... Warforged player stats are on the
Wizard's site in the Dragon Magazine section. In fact there is a lot
of choice FREE 4th edition goodies in the Dragon magazine section. It
appears, at least for now, that Wizard's are putting the Dragon and
Dungeon mags as PDFs on their site. Initially it looked like they
would put them as a single file, but last I checked I was only able to
find the specific sections as PDFs ... which works for me. (Don't
have to download junk that I don't want ... only really miss the
Dragon funny section.)

Personally I'm thinking of a Swordmage Warforged character. Have to
check with Matt and see between a Ranger and a Thief he was going to
create and I'll do the other.

A note about Living Forgotten Realms ... Wizards/RPGA said you no
longer have to focus on the section of the world assigned to Colorado,
but did recommend that everyone in the same adventure use the same
region as it allows for better adventures for everyone involved.
Colorado has been assigned (from what I'm told) the Moon Shea Island
region. Basically the article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?
x=dnd/drrep/20080730) says that there are more you can do in the
adventures from your chosen region than in other regions.

Yeah, everything about the character concept just sort of slipped into

Also, I decided on a few other things-
Adventurer background: Explorer/pathfinder or whatever it was called

I'm leaning more toward a Shielding Sword Mage w/ Shielding Ageis /
Booming Blade, Frigid Blade / (Chilling Blade, Foe Snare, or Lightning
Clash) / and Dimensional Thunder as my Daily power. Not to mention
starting 4th level will be picking some Spell Scar powers.
It may turn out we'll have enough for two groups since we had three
players + 1 GM that were looking for a 4th and possibly a 5th player.
So far I haven't heard much from the other guys though.

best non-magical sword that WotC has given stats for ... which would
be the FullBlade (it's in the adventurers vault weapon list in the

Thanks for the heads up. Based on what you posted, I should be able to
just drop it into place and change the damage.
The Prof is the same so the Bonus's would not change either. Still +6
to hit. Nice Birthday present, thanks!

I figured with you running a Shielding Swordmage and me running a
Assault Swordmage, we would get the best of both worlds.
Besides, WoTC says you should double up on the Defender Characters.
I know one thing.. I pity anyone that pisses both Swordmages off!!
LOLOL!

I need to look over the Adventures Vault.. see if I can find something
better for armor.
Like FeyLeather or something. I would feel better with a little bit
higher AC. Even with the healing surges.

The Full Blade is a Superior Melee Weapon, so you'd have to swap Quick

Decided to go with the two-hander? I don't think I'd be able to give

Hmm.

Yeah, we've got a pile of players here.

I'm actually really okay with running two separate games, and even
playing in another game besides that.

Steve already has three of his friends who all want to play together,
as I understand it, and one of them also wants to DM. So that's
almost a full group by itself.

I'd be happy to get in on that game, run by James if he's running one,
or I'd run a game for you guys, if that would be preferable. Then,
maybe we could include one or possibly two other people, as well.

But that means that I'm not going to go forward with the assumption
that Steve, James, Matthew, or John would be playing in my other group
(s).

I know that for one game, I've got a close-to-full group with just my
previously-known real-life friends and those whom they're bringing in
with them. I can and want to include a couple of other players from
the (surprisingly large) pool here in that game, though.

Then I could set up another whole group with different people, and the
only overlap that might exist there would be my roommate Tim, if he
wants to play in both games. Depending on scheduling, and whether or
not Tim wants to or is able to play in that second game, I may run it
somewhere else besides our condo. Either at Enchanted Grounds, or
even someone else's home, if anyone else wants to host.

Then again, I may run both games right here. It largely depends on
what Tim wants, which will largely depend on the exact scheduling
requirements of the players in that group. Which will depend on WHO
the players are in that group.

I've got a lot of interested parties now, more than I expected. I'm
going to try to accommodate as many people as I can. I've received
some good communications or ideas from several of you (Lena, Raven,
Kyler, and Dawn), so as far as I'm concerned, as long as scheduling
stuff works out, you're at the top of the priority list. And then
there are a few other guys (Chris, Vic, Chad, Craig, and Anthony) who
have expressed interest, as well, but I haven't found out much about
them yet, or their availability has been tentative.

So I guess what I'm looking at is something like this: We've got a
fairly hefty but not quite complete core of players for two separate
groups right now, plus I want to run another group on top of that.

One group would be the Steve/James/Matthew/John group, which was a pre-
existing group before they even contacted me. I'm thinking that two,
and possibly even three, people could join those four, and that most
likely, James would be the DM. (Or me, if he doesn't want to.) I
don't know if they have anyone else in mind, or how many people they'd
want to play with, or anything like that. In theory, I might join
their game, and Tim might or might not, and that could be it, or they
could want one more person, which we could draw from the large number
of folks who've contacted me here about playing.

The second group, which would be "my" first group, would start with a
base of Tim, Jimmy, and The Twins, which is four players before I add
any outside people. I'd be fine with including an additional one or
two players in that group.

Then I could run "my" second game, which may or may not include Tim,
and then the rest of the slots would be wide open. I'd presumably
want to fill that with the people who weren't in the first group, or
in Steve and James' group. So that could be four to six possible
openings, depending on Tim. And again, that game may or may not take
place here at our home.

Tim's buddy Rich also has a standing invitation to play on a part-
time, as-available basis in either of my two games, so that's one more
person who may be around, so my group-filling plans will have to take
that into account as well.

So, all we need to do now is figure out when and where these games
will be played, and who is going to be in each group. If some people
have a lesser availability than others, we could make one of the games
a bi-weekly or even monthly game, instead of weekly, and then the
people with less gaming time could be in that group. I'm fine with
running two games a week, I think, and even playing in one more
besides that, assuming nothing conflicts. My schedule is completely
open.

If I run two games right out of the gate, I'll probably make one of
them the Forgotten Realms-based New Wine campaign, and the other will
likely be based around the Scales of War Adventure Path, in a neutral
world setting (the 4th Edition points-of-light "assumed setting").

I will still be working on preparing Penumbra, as well, but I plan to
take my time with that. (I have two other players, not yet mentioned,
who are specifically waiting to get into that game, and seem very
excited about it. But they'll have to be patient!)

So what I was thinking was that I'd just go ahead and schedule a get-
together, character-building, campaign and character background "jam
session" and maybe a little bit of initial play session, very soon. I
was thinking Sunday. But I wanted to wait and see if Jimmy would be
available that day, and when I talked to him about it this last
weekend, he wasn't sure. So I sat on the idea. Now, apparently, he
wants to come over on Sunday and do that sort of thing, according to
Tim, anyway. So, I'm thinking that maybe I'll just invite whomever
can make it this Sunday over, and we'll start the creative process and
do some planning, if nothing else. Then maybe next week, or next
weekend, we can have another day, similar in purpose, and the other
people could come for that. I assume that most of you aren't going to
be free on 48 hours' notice to come and meet up this Sunday, which is
fine.

On the other hand, not counting myself, I'm looking at 18 people right
now* (also not counting Michael and Megan, who are waiting for
Penumbra) who are part of this "pool" of possible/interested players.
That's a ton! So I don't think I should just post my address and say,
"Anyone feel free to show up if you can!" I could end up with a huge
crowd over here. (Although that's probably overly optimistic.)

(* Tim, Jimmy, The Twins, Rich, Lena, Dawn, Raven, Kyler, Steve,
James, Matthew, John, Vic, Chris, Craig, Chad, and Anthony!)

So let's do this: If you can, please post, again, here in this
thread, your availability and preferences, as best as you can figure.
IF you can make it this Sunday for a pre-game planning/background-ing/
general kibitzing session, go ahead and let me know now. (And what
time would be best for you.) If you can't, that's fine. Let me know
if you can next weekend, and when.

I do want to actually start this up, but I'm slightly whelmed by the
logistics of it at this point. I've seen some cool ideas and fun
personalities from some of the people who have responded here, so I'm
pretty excited about gaming with you folks. We've just got the slight
challenge of getting concrete groups and times nailed down, now, and
we'll be on our way. The more input, needs, intentions, advice, or
other feedback I get from everyone, the easier it'll be. (Unless that
just makes it harder . . . but that's physics!)

I'm sure I seem terribly disorganized about now. There's a good
reason for that. I am, in fact, terribly disorganized. But I think
once we get past this initial tricky part, we'll have a good game!

So... this Sunday, November 23rd, at our condo in Littleton, right
near the intersection of Wadsworth and Chatfield. Who thinks they can
make it, and what's the ideal time frame for you? This won't be an
actual session of the game, so don't fret if you can't be there.
We'll probably end up having at least one more of these meetings, if
not a couple. And of course, the "real" scheduling for the actual game
(s) will be done well in advance, and making sure that people can be
there, et cetera.

The good news is, there are plenty of Needlefang Drake Swarms for
everyone. (Trust me, they're friendly!)

I can make it on Sunday so long as the bus people don't decide to drop
me off in the middle of nowhere. They DO that sometimes!
Like I said before- my work schedule is "When I do stuff I get paid.
Like whatever." so timing is just not an issue for me.

If I understand the incredible amount of words correctly, the
groupings look something like this, which is subject to change and
rearrange like crazy depending on feedback:

The Arbitrarily Named James Group:
DM: James or Josiah
Players: Steve, Matthew, John, James Or Josiah, _____, _____

Group A, Which Could Be The New Wine, Old Wineskins One:
DM: Josiah, I think.
Players: Tim, Jimmy, A Twin, Another Twin, _____, _____

Group 73, Possibly The Assumed Core Setting Thing:
DM: Also Josiah?
Players: MaybeTim, _____, _____, _____, _____, _____

Completely Unassigned Players Who We'll Most Definitely Need Feedback
From:
Too many to list, really. At least eight people.

Hey, with three groups instead of one, that makes things easier to
balance out. Reccomended group size is 6 (1 DM 5 PC), can easily vary
by +/- one.

Availability: Currently I am free weekends and Monday evenings.

Background: AD&D 1-3E, including Dragonlance, Dark Sun, and a little
Ravenloft, Planescape, and FR, plus tons of generic fantasy worlds.
Rifts, Shadowrun, Seven Seas and other misc RPGs. No real 4E
experience yet other than browsing through the books. I've probably
played every character type imaginable. Currently thinking of trying
out a rogue type player based on Indiana Jones or that guy from
National Treasure, scholarly type treasure hunter.

Personal: I'm 32, in grad school, have my own place and
transportation, punctual and pretty reliable about showing up for
gaming sessions. The only conflicts I'll have is no gaming during
finals week each semester.

Hi Tiana,

First of all, because of your obviously sincere apology, I forgive you
for making a message here. In fact, I'll write you a blanket pardon
for all such crimes, past, present, or future.

As for being a dork for posting here, well, think of it like this...

If you're a dork for posting here, then everyone else who posts here
is also a dork, which means, if nothing else, that you inherently fit
in. Furthermore, anyone else reading this group must also be a dork,
unless it's someone you know who is stalking you. Said hypothetical
stalker, then, is probably also a dork. Which, by the complex laws of
stalkerdom, means that you're more likely NOT to be a dork, for the
same reason that moths, not being creatures of living fire, are drawn
to flames. It's complicated, but trust me.

The bad news is, there are something like seventeen billion people
lined up to play now. (Although I, for one, will be damned if we let
those dirty Alpha Centaurians in. Earth games for Earth people, I
say!) The good news is, I think that you just might possess a
certain . . . je ne sais quoi . . . that would elevate you toward the
inner circle, as it were. (Bien que, honnêtement, je sais exactement
quoi. Astuce: vous êtes une fille.)

Ignore everything I'm saying in this post. I'm half-asleep.
Hypnagogic, if you prefer.

Welcome, or something like that.

If I'm reading this correctly, it's basically a 30 page dissertation
whose core thesis is: "Tim will explain."

I'm in for one or two groups that would meet weekly, and then a couple
more that want to meet less frequently. It all depends on the
scheduling - I have a job that gets me up at 3:30 in the am and sends
me to bed at 8:30. And a girlfriend who demands a portion of my
weekend time while aboslutely refusing to play D&D.

For now, I'd like to focus on getting New Wine going, as I want to
partake in that game. I also want to get in Penumbra, which Josiah
tells me will be happening, "soon." (Note: New Wine, Old Wineskins was
first described as happening "soon" about 1 month after the 4th
edition core books first came out. Applying internet math, this means
that Penumbra will take off ... let's see .... divide by Pi ... add
the sum of the bases ... subtract the sums of the square of the other
two sides ... I got August 15th. 2015.)

Beyond those two, if we have a couple of groups meeting once or twice
a month, I'd love to step into a spot.

Properly deciphering Josiah is an important skill to have. First,
you'll have things like this where the sheer amount of time and words
used to describe something that could have been sumed up in a single
sentence would put Tolkein or Dickens to shame. This isn't so hard,
especially if you've ever had training for SAT math word problems.

The one you haven't yet experience will be when he drops into what I
like to call his "Roget" form. Josiah has a command of the english
language unlike anyone I've ever seen, and really likes putting it to
use. So, much like reading one of those annoying Victorian era novels
that make regular use of words no longer in the vernacular, it becomes
incredibly important to divine the meaning of any one particular word
from the sense in which it is used while at the same time showing the
appropriate amount of awe and respect towards him for having used such
a fancy sounding word.

For instance, he recently used the word "pulchritudinous." I was
surprised to find that he didn't just make this word up. Apparently,
it means "pretty."

So, in addition to the usual dice bag and character sheet, another
important tool of roleplaying in these games will be the latest
version of the OED.

As I was tyring to decipher the meaning of this term, Josiah just
piped in with, "Dude, Latin is a complicated language. No one
understands it but its woman."

And a new meme is born.

If your bus pass includes light Rail, the easiest thing to do is take
the D line soutn from either 16th and Stout or Coalfax and Auraria
stations. Head to the last stop (mineral) and transfer to the 401 bus,
going west. Hop off at the Wadsworth and Chatfield stop; we'll be
right across the street from there.

I'm not sure on what time we're thinking for Sunday, but I had the
impression we were shooting for a bit after noon. I'll have to get
Josiah to send out something solid. Which is a bit like trying to nail-
down Jello.

Already set you an Email asking for your Address. So you can count me

I have been working on my character for the New wine, Old Wineskins
game.
But I am interested in working into the group for your advanced game
of Penumbra. I would love to get into a full blown campaign.
So are the players & Characters from Old wine going to advance to
Penumbra? Or will the players need to create higher leveled
characters?

In Downtown Santa Cruz, you take Route 20, and about 1/4 of the time
they take you to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead.
I ended up somewhere called "The Lighthouse". There was no lighthouse.

You know, that's how I deal with foreign languages. I learn a few
words and then guess at what all the others mean.
Of course, if I'm not paying attention, I get a chance to practice my

You forgot to add the Fibonacci coding to that formula.
Applying internet math, this means that Penumbra will take off ...

subtract the sums of the square of the other two sides .. and divide

Sorry for the double post. But I wanted to share what I worked up
today.
Here is my Sword-Mage's history. Of course it still has to be cleared
by the DM and I have a few places I need to beef up.
But as you can see it does provide some major hooks for the game. I
hope you all like it.
I used the Hero Builder's Guidebook Personal History Generator.

Personal History of Revok Ken`rilyn'ett

1.Home Climate: Temperate Forest/Farmlands.
2.Home Community: Born in Shadowdale, but raised in the Elven city of
Myth Drannor. Child of the Alliance forged with the Dales.
Revok is the child of a Drow Male & Eladrin Female. Thou this allowed
his Eladrian blood to remain true, it does brand him as an Half-Drow.
This is a fact that was hidden from Revok, till he received a sealed
scroll tube. Explaining how he came to be. It also held something his
mother called the Tear of Mystra. A crystal like jewel in the shape of
a teardrop. A gift from Revok's father to his mother. It is not known
why the jewel is called what it is.
3.Family Economic Status: Wealthy – Your family owns a dwelling and
may own other property. Family income significantly exceeds basic
needs. Revok's mother was well off in Myth Drannor. This came from her
families service to Ilsevele Miritar's rule in the refounding of the
city during the Year of Lighting Storms (1374 DR).
4.Family Social Standing: Positive Military Affiliation – Your family
is closely tied to a group that's generally well regarded by the
community.
5.Family Defense Readiness: Medium – Your family trains actively in
matters martial and is prepared for combat with a few days of last-
minute preparation.
6.Family Private Ethics: Neutral – Your family has neutral ethics or
no consistent family ethical direction.
7.Family Public Ethics: Normal – Your family's ethical reputation
matches their private ethics.
8.Family Religious Commitment: Open Heretics – Your family believes in
a religious movement considered heretical or dangerous by the
community at large. Due to your Father's devotion to Mystra even after
her death at the hands of Cyric and Shar. And your Mother's support of
his beliefs, you and your family were viewed as an outcast by the
Religious-Right in Myth Drannor.
9.Family Reputation: A Black Sheep or Two – In general, your family is
upstanding, but one or more members of the family are known to be
disreputable. This is due to your Mother and Father when they were in
Shadowdale. In Myth Drannor your family reputation is Unknown.
10. Family Political Views: Enfranchised – Your family is a part of
the Political system and supports it. Your family has been called on
in the past to help in the defense of Myth Drannor and in clearing out
unsafe areas.
11. Family Power Structure: Matriarchy – The female members control
your family. This is due to your Father being used to such a structure
from his birth.
12. Ancestors of Note: Magic Item – An ancestor owned a magic item of
specific or unusual note that may (or may not) have become a family
heirloom.
The item in question is the sword Cyric's Bane. Made by Mystra
herself, taken from your Father's own body/mind/skills. When Cyric and
Shar killed Mystra the sword was caught in the magical backlash, and
as a result was shattered. Growing up you saw the hilt of the sword,
but that is all. You were never allowed to handle it, nor speak of it,
since the Church of Cyric has become so powerful.
13. Early Childhood Instruction: Magic – You showed an affinity for
the arcane arts. More then likely due to your duel heritage and strong
Eladrin bloodlines. The magical arts are truly a part of your blood.
14. Formal Education: Magic – You studied “defenses against the dark
arts” and learned ways to fight monsters and battle the influences of
black magic. But you were also drawn to the martial arts as well and
showed a talent for that as well. As such it was hard to keep you in
class.
15. Learning a Trade: Special Military Training - Due to your shown
aptitude in both Magic and Martial studies you were accepted into Myth
Drannor's School for Sword-Mages, a very rare thing. As few show the
necessary skills in both schools of thought.
16. Life Events (Thus Far): Survived Major Danger to Community –
Flood, famine, plague or another calamity struck when you were a
child.
17. Youth Events: Religion – You served the character's faith in a
minor capacity, perhaps including a minor vow or oath.
As a child you were taken to the natural temple of Mystra outside of
Myth Drannor proper. You were also told the story of how Mystra was
killed and how your Father served her during his adventures before you
were born. Also you were told the true meaning of your name.
18. Pivotal Events: No Pivotal Events – Numbers 16 and 17 cover the
most dramatic aspects of your past. It was at this time you received
the sealed scroll case spoken of in number 2 of this list.
19. Parents: Parents Lost – You may learn learn more about them in
future adventures. Your Father left shortly after the death of Mystra,
it is not a subject your Mother likes to talk about. During the time
you were in school learning how to channel magic through your sword,
your Mother left. It was at this time you learned the truth of your
past.
20. Siblings: No Siblings – You are an only child.
21. Grandparents: Great-Grandparents alive – At least one, maybe more
are still alive in the city of Myth Drannor. Mother's parents are
alive as well, thou they are not in contact with you. Father's parents
are dead.
22. Extended Family: Your Mother's family is an well known line that
can trace its roots back to the Eladrin of the Feywyld.
23. Friends: Few – You do not make friends easily, but your a good
friend to them. You have a few close friends in the city of Myth
Drannor.
24. Enemies: The Enemy of My Friend is my Enemy – One of your friends
has an enemy, and now that person hates you too. You have no direct
enemy as of this time.
25. Instructors: Unrelated – The person that taught you the most is
not actually in your area of expertise. One of the city guard took you
under his wing at an early age. He was the first one to put a sword
into your hands and show you how to use it. He was also part of the
reason that you were allowed to study at the Sword-Mage school. He
spoke up about your martial skills.
The instructor of the Sword-Mage school was not of Eladrin bloodlines,
but was very skilled in the arcane ways of battle.
Your basic Arcane instructor was of an much lower class then your
parents. And as such had trouble with keeping the students in line.

Erm. Well, about that...

As much as I'd like that, and you'd like that, and Ringo here SURE
would like that, I'm going to have to propose an alternate course of
action.

Which is, um, not doing that.

Next weekend, I promise. See that other post I just did for unhelpful

Yeah, I overslept and then realized that I don't have any small bills
to take the bus with and the trip is 2 and a half hours long at

So I was like, yeah, I'm going to go say "oh wait nevermind- I'm

Trying to pay for 1.75$ bus rides in twenties is really not fun.

Yeah, Sunday bus-riding is downright post-apocalyptic. Mind the
zombies.

Fortunately for you, and for us, and for everyone else (except the
zombies, I guess), you probably won't be called upon to endure the
Herculean effort of getting here to Slightly-West-Of-Center-Of-Nowhere
on Domingo Sangriento, because I think that you're going to be in Team
Eliterrama, which will be the non-Sunday group. (Not to be confused
with Team Wicketude, which WILL meet on Sundays. Probably.)

More details as soon as I make them up!
