Manfrotto 504HD Video Head (Black): Summary

The 504HD offers a perfect balance between design and performance. The bridge design improves the head’s rigidity, and its PAN friction control is fast, simple to fine-tune and protected from knocks. All structural components are made from aluminum, with the PAN axis rotation unit using ball bearings to obtain smooth, totally vibration-free controlled movements that can be directly adjusted using the head’s FDS variable friction system. FDS on both the PAN and TILT axes also ensures that the head works perfectly at all temperatures, with all types of equipment and under all loads. The 504HD has been designed to offer a load capacity of up to 16.3 lb, making it suitable for a huge range of equipment. The CBS counterbalance system has four presets for camera weights 5.5 lb, 11 lb and 16.3 lb. Leveling the head is easy thanks to the 75 mm diameter half ball and the back-lit bubble level. Two 3/8” threads on the top plate allow accessories to be directly and securely attached to the head, cutting down on set-up time and keeps your camera hot shoe free.

5$1,000+ Fluid Head for under $400? Oh Yeahhh! It really is THAT good!
By J. Johnson
So I've been happily using my Manfrotto 501HDV/531MVB2 combo for almost 5 years now,
but I recently added a Kessler Crane Slider to my kit, which created a dilemma...

I want to at least be able to do some subtle panning while I use this slider, so:
__ Do I "save" my money buying a cheepo "fluid" head to attach to the slider?
__ Or do I bite the bullet and upgrade my Manfrotto 531MVB2 sticks with the new 504HD fluid head?

Well, I followed my instinct and went with the upgrade...
and OH MY WORD... I DEFINITELY made the right decision!!!
WOW, WOW, W O W ... what a HUGE difference!

And please don't get me wrong, I really love my old 501HDV fluid head.
It's been a fantastic little workhorse for me for nearly 5 years.
And I'll continue getting good mileage out of it with my new Kessler Crane slider.

But I had NO IDEA what I was missing until I put this 504HD onto my old sticks.

* Adjustments (tightening/loosening pan/tilt tension) has never been easier or more intuitive.

* The multiple counterbalance settings are a dream come true, replacing the single setting on the 501HDV.

* The action is incredibly accurate and silky smooth.

* Oh man, and the top plate is HUGE, giving your camera rig an incredibly stable, rock-solid platform.

* And I really appreciate the two accessory ports on the left and right sides of the top plate.
They're both solid, Industry standard 3/8-inch x 16 female inputs, and I'm using both of them
to attach my two Zacuto 12-inch articulating arms; one holds my monitor (on the left) and the
other holds my Zoom H4n (on the right). It's so nice getting those two things OFF my camera rig.

So to wrap it all up...
I would HIGHLY recommend the 504HD fluid head to anyone who's asking.
I can't imagine a scenario where you'd regret buying this thing...
well, that's assuming you're actually going to use it :)

** NOTE **
I almost forgot... there actually is one NOTE about this new design.
I guess you could almost say it's technically a "CON" against the 504HD:

** The 75mm ball head is NOT removable **
(and the same is true for the 509HD's 100mm ball head)

My guess would be that it's because they use the space inside the ball head
for some of the fluid head mechanics. But personally I'm more than happy to deal
with that by adding a high-hat to whatever setup I want to use the 504HD with.

Cheers :)

5Silky smooth mechanics, yet extremely sturdy
By Damian
After a near mishap with my previous tripod setup, I decided to upgrade from my rather unstable support to the Manfrotto 504HD fluid head and a new set of legs. Right out of the box, I was blown away at the build quality and beautiful design of the 504HD. However, only when I mounted my Panasonic Ag-Af100 to the fluid head, using the included snappy and secure quick release plate, could I truly appreciate just what an elegant feat of design it really is. With the easy to use pan and tilt drag controls, the adjustable control arm, and the buttery smooth mechanics, this investment was well worth the money spent. I've also never felt more secure with leaving my equipment unmanned as this thing could support a fairly beastly rig. Oh, there's even a light on the spirit level for getting those shots lined up just right in low-light situations. How clever!

Take it from me, if you're looking to not only increase your production value but confidently secure your camera setup, this is the way to go!

5Excellent low cost head, makes a great combo
By L. Schrader
I have used many different heads over the years, O'Connor 100, Sachtler DV, and other Manfrotto heads. Some of these heads were very large for 35mm movie cameras, and some were comparable to this head in size and function, and some were smaller Manfrotto's. I bought this head used on Amazon for a ridiculous price. It is far better then the smaller Manfrotto heads 501 / 701, they are like toys to this head, and the 504 was not that much more money. The Sachtler head which cost much more money, is a little smaller, and functions about the same. This head has variable drag settings like a Sachtler, but also an illuminated bubble level, and it looks sexy.

I put this head on the 75mm bowl, Manfrotto 535 carbon fiber legs. An excellent pairing, weighing in at just over 11 lbs. This set up works fast, and smooth. I also ordered an extra left sided pan handle for an even smoother pan. These legs also go quite low and high, and spread wide for stability. I wish I had moved up sooner, as I have been using the smaller toy stuff for too long. In the end, I ended up with about the same quality as the Sachtler product I have used, but with better, more solid legs, and lots of extra change.

I recommend waiting for the head on open box if you like, and Amazon.com (not the third party sellers) had the legs priced much less then other dealers too.
